littermates.â
Cat names had always struck him as pretentious. He was a dog man himself. Dogs had forthright names like Buster and Max. âWhereâd you get those handles?â
âThe bard. Viola and Sebastian are the sister and brother in Twelfth Night. â
âOh.â Shakespeare. It figured. If he ever had a cat, God forbid, did that mean he should call it Euclid?
They sat in silence, slowly drinking the tea. She appeared lost in thought, but finally looked up. âIâm scared.â
That was an admission heâd never have anticipated from the Pam Carver he knew. âYou donât need to tell me, ifââ
âItâs time I talked to somebody, and it looks like youâre elected.â
âYou can trust me, Pam.â
âI do.â
Her sincerity touched him. âIs there a man in the picture? Are you planning to marry?â
âNo man.â Then she gave a short, derisive laugh. âObviously there was one. But marriage isnât an option.â
Grant was confused by his reaction. How could he be relieved to hear that? âDoes he know?â
âNo. And heâs not going to.â
âIs that fair? Maybe he would want to be involved. Help.â
âPlease.â Her eyes begged. âYouâll have to take my word for it. Iâm in this by myself. For good.â
The enormity of her predicament was hard to imagine. âItâll be tough being a single mother. Iâm sure youâve thought of that. Have you consideredâ¦you knowâ¦?â
Her cheeks flamed. âThatâs not an option. I want this baby very much. This may be my only chance to become a mother. Youâve surely noticed Iâm not getting any younger.â The edge in her voice cut off any inept, glib response. âSo I simply have to figure out where to go from here.â
âDoes anyone else know?â
âNo. And I donât plan for them to until it has to come out.â She drew the throw closer around her shoulders. âIâll have to resign then.â
That would really be a blow for her. She was a born teacher, but schoolsâespecially private schoolsâcouldnât overlook what might be viewed as âimmoralâ behavior. And Keystone? For the second time that day, the school motto came to him. Caring, Character, Curiosity. Jim Campbell, the headmaster, was big on character, but even if he found a way to ease Pamâs situation, would the trustees go for an unmarried, pregnant English department chairman? Pam was in a no-win situation. âJeez, I suppose youâre right. What then?â
She looked directly at him. âI donât know. I wish I did.â She crossed her arms over her stomach, as if protecting her womb. âBut Iâll tell you one thing.â Hervoice held the old spark. âI will do whatever I must to love and support this baby.â
âYouâve got guts.â Pam had always been a fighter. Sheâd need to be now.
âI figure Iâll be able to make it at school until Thanksgiving, at least. That should give me time to line up some other type of work.â
âHave you seen a doctor?â
âIâm not very far along. Except for morning sickness, I feel fine. Iâll try to locate a doctor this week. One that has nothing to do with Keystone School.â She reached for her cup, then took several sips. âIâm sorry to burden you with this.â
He rose to his feet. âItâs no burden.â He picked up his cup and saucer and carried them to the kitchen divider, then returned to her. âYouâre brave. Youâll manage.â He stood awkwardly, feeling helpless. âWhat about your family? Can they help?â
âNot really. My motherâs dead. My father and I are very close.â She ducked her head. âHeâll be disappointed in me at first.â
He waited.
Then she looked up. âBut
