satisfaction of knowing you put your foot down and made a decision that was best for your family.â
âSomehow I donât think this is me putting my foot down.â
âSo youâll do it?â
âI never said that.â How could Cole justify getting married on the off chance it would help Katie get pregnant? Then again, how could he justify not getting married if there was a chance it could help Katie get pregnant?
âWeâd be lying to your wife,â he pointed out to Kyle, looking for some loophole that didnât make him the bad guy.
âNo, we wouldnât. We wouldnât have to say a thing. Katieâs a hopeless romantic. Trust me, sheâs going to throwyou and Sydney together no matter what you and I decide. All youâd have to do is hang around and look besotted.â
âI donât do besotted.â
âJust look at Sydney the way you were looking at her before dinner.â
âI havenâtââ
âThat was more aroused than besotted, Iâll admit. But it should work.â
âYouâre out of your mind.â
âSheâs a babe, Cole. Itâs not like it would be this huge hardship.â
Alarm crept into Coleâs system as Kyleâs words started to make some kind of bizarre sense. He couldnât consider this. Then again, he couldnât not consider this.
âThis is the dumbest plan Iâve ever heard,â he said. âTake Katie on a vacation. She can relax on the beach. Iâll pay.â
âSheâll worry about you.â
âShe doesnât have to worry about me.â
âI know that, and you know that, but Katieâ¦â
It was Coleâs turn to gaze at the dark hillsides across the lake. âYou know, this morning things were looking pretty good for me. Iâd just bought a new mare. I was minding my own business, thinking about shoeing, thinking about building a new hay shed, maybe buying a combineâ¦â
Kyle started to laugh.
âThen along comes Sydney Wainsbrook and suddenly sheâs taking over my life.â
âKyle?â Katie called from the kitchen.
âYes, sweetheart?â he called back.
âDo you think itâs too late for Sydney to drive to Wichita Falls all by herself?â
âOf course itâs too late.â Kyle waggled a victorious eyebrow at Cole. âItâs way too late.â
âSheâs going to stay over,â Katie called.
âSounds good.â
âI havenât agreed to anything,â Cole muttered to his brother.
âYou have the easy part,â said Kyle. âJust hang around and look besotted.â
âIâm going home.â
âCome back for breakfast.â
âNope.â
âIâll send Katie after you.â
âGood luck with that.â
Three
C ole was steadfastly chowing down on hotcakes and coffee when a knock came on his cabin door.
âCome in,â he called gruffly, ready to take on Kyle or Katie or both.
But it was Sydney who poked her head around the door. âHey, Cole.â
Cole cringed, cussing inside his head. Low blow, Kyle. âGood morning, Sydney.â
She gestured inside. âMay I?â
No, never. âOf course.â
Her lips curved into that brilliant, sexy smile. âThanks,â she breathed, messing with both his equilibrium and his libido.
Katie had obviously lent her some clothes. Instead of her impractical suit, Sydney wore a tight pair of faded blue jeans, a short T-shirt, and her hair was pulled back in aperky ponytail. Her makeup was more subtle than yesterday but, if anything, it made her sexier.
âCoffee?â he asked, finding his voice and rising from his chair.
âLove some.â
âItâs a little better than yesterday.â One cup of coffee. That was it. And no matter what, he wasnât letting her talk him into going back to the house for breakfast.
Kyleâs plan
