doing?
âItâs not just you anymore,â Cole said to Kyle. âYou have a familyââ
Sydney pinched him. It actually hurt.
He swung his gaze back to her, but caught Katieâs expression on the way.
He stopped.
He stared at his sister-in-lawâs white lips. âKatie?â
Kyle pulled back his chair as Katie started to tremble.
Katie stood and Kyle rose with her.
âWhat?â Cole jumped up. âWhatâs wrong?â
Katie gave a little shake of her head and waved away their concern. âIâm fine.â
âYouâre not fine,â said Cole.
She placed her hand on Kyleâs arm. âIâm really okay. Iâm just going to get a glass of water.â
Kyle put an arm around her shoulders and gave her a little squeeze. âYou sure?â he whispered.
She nodded. âReally. The less fuss, the better. Iâll be right back.â
Kyle watched her disappear into the kitchen.
Cole raked a hand through his hair, trying to sift through the turn of events. âIâm sorry,â he said. âWhat the heckâ¦â
âCan I help?â Sydney asked Kyle.
Kyle closed his eyed and dropped back into his chair. He shook his head. âItâs the talk of kids.â
Cole slowly sat, opening his mouth to ask for an explanation, but Sydneyâs fingers closed on his thigh again.
He felt like a bull in a china shop. What was he missing here?
âShe hoped to be pregnant by now,â said Kyle.
Cole went cold.
Sydney tossed her napkin onto the table. âI am going to make sure sheâs okay.â
Both men rose with her.
After Sydney disappeared, Kyle moved restlessly to the rail, taking a long, steady swig of his wine.
Cole followed, not sure of what to say. He and Kyle didnât exactly have heart-to-heart talks about their sex lives, never mind their sperm counts. Was this a medical problem? Did they need to see a doctor?
âAre youâ¦â he began. âUh, do youâ¦â
âThe doctor thinks itâs stress,â said Kyle. âBut we donât know anything for sure, and Katieâs worried sheâll never have kids.â
Cole could have kicked himself. âAnd I was a big help.â
Kyle snorted out a dry chuckle as he gazed out over the Blue Hills. âNext time, watch my expression and grab a clue.â
âNext time Iâll pay attention when Sydney mangles my thigh.â Cole regretted his bull-headed stupidity. âIs there anything I can do to help?â
âGet married and have some babies so Katie doesnât have this whole dynasty thing on her shoulders.â
âThat would be a trick.â
âHey, youâve got a bona fide offer in my kitchen.â
âWe could have a bona fide con artist in your kitchen.Besides, Sydney doesnât want babies, she wants the Thunderbolt. Iâm pretty sure this is a platonic offer.â
Kyle turned to face Cole. He braced his elbow on the rail and a speculative gleam rose in his eyes.
âWhat?â asked Cole, dragging the word out slowly, trepidation rising.
âYou wouldnât really have to have babies with Sydney,â said Kyle. âYouâd just have to let Katie think youâll have babies with Sydney.â
âThatâs insane.â And even if it wasnât, Katie knew why Sydney was here. Thereâs no way theyâd ever convince her they were having babies together.
âNo.â Kyle shook his head. âItâs brilliant. You pretend to fall in love with her, pretend to marry her for real. She gets the brooch and Katie relaxes enough to get pregnant.â
âAnd I get a wife I donât know, who doesnât love me, wonât sleep with me but takes my jewelry?â
Kyle took another swig of his wine. âIâm sure youâre not the first guy thatâs happened to.â
Cole snorted.
Kyle clapped him on the shoulder. âYou get the
