smiling warmly. âI had Meade last year. Heâs great if you donât mind a lot of reading.â
âThanks,â P.J. mumbled.
âReading is just about all he ever does,â Liz teased.
âMe, too,â Greta replied.
âIf you count
Glamour
and
Vogue!
â Reenie exclaimed.
They laughed againâeveryone but P.J.
Reenie glanced at her watch. âOh, wow. Itâs almost time for first period. Iâd better get my books. Liz, Iâll show you where your locker is, if you want to hang on for a sec.â
âOkay,â Liz answered. âI could use the help. Iâm still a little lost.â
Reenie worked the combination too quickly and had to do it again. Five. Nine. Two. The lock opened with a click. She tugged on the door.
Stuck.
She pulled harder.
Still stuck. Whatâs going on? she thought.
âWhy wonât it open?â Liz asked.
And then it did open.
The door swung open, nearly pushing Reenie to the wall.
Liz cried out and jumped back.
Reenie screamed.
Chapter 8
FAST EXIT
A hand reached out of the locker.
Then another hand. They reached for Reenieâs throat.
Reenie shook her head. âI donât believe this. Donât you guys ever give up?â
Ty was crammed inside her lockerâhis back pressed against one side, his knees jammed against the other. Reenie couldnât believe he had squeezed into such a small space.
âWhat took you so long?â he asked, breathing hard. He pulled himself from her locker. âI was
dying
in there.â
âYou know, Ty, Iâm getting really sick of thesedumb jokes. What if you got stuck?â Reenie demanded. âWhat if you suffocated before I opened the door?â
âAir can get in through those little slits,â Ty explained. âI really scared you that time, didnât I? I had to try since Seanâs trick didnât work at your house. You were scared. Come on, admit it.â
Reenie couldnât help smiling. Ty sounded so excited. âI was startled, not scared,â she told him. âJust like last time. Scared is when youâre walking alone at night, and you hear footsteps behind you.â
âScared is when youâre in a room all by yourself, and you feel cold fingers on the back of your neck,â Greta suggested.
âYeah,â Reenie agreed. âThatâs scared. When something surprises you, youâre just startled. Scared is a lot more serious.â
âAnd it lasts a lot longer,â Greta added.
Ty raised his hands in surrender. âOkay, okay. I give. You were only startled.â
âHow did you get in there?â Greta demanded.
But Ty didnât answer. His eyes fixed on something down the hall.
No, Reenie realized. Not something down the hall. Liz. We forgot all about her.
Liz stood quietly off to the side with her brother. Ty seemed unable to take his eyes off her.
âThis is Ty. Heâs not really crazy. He acted perfectly normal until he started hanging around with us,â Reenie explained. âThen he got addicted to ourstupid practical jokes. Weâre always playing dead. Trying to scare each other to death. Sick, right?â
âDefinitely sick,â Liz replied. She turned to Ty.
âIâm Liz, and thatâs my brother, P.J. Weâre new at Shadyside.â
P.J. lowered his gaze and didnât say anything.
âIâm new, too,â Ty replied. âI started at Shadyside this fall.â
âHow do you like it?â Liz asked.
âItâs okay. I met these guys right off.â He gestured to Reenie and Greta. âWe hang out a lot. We have a pretty good time.â
âItâs a little weird the first day at a new school,â Liz admitted. âYou get all turned around. I even tried to get into Reenieâs locker by mistake.â
Ty kept staring at Liz. He seemed to have forgotten the rest of them.
