outside fourth-period math class today, acting real casual. But he kept checking the door. As soon as Liz came out, he walked up to her as if he just happened to be passing by.â
âThink Ty is finally going to ask someone out after all these months?â Greta wondered.
âI bet heâs working up to it,â Reenie replied.
âI think they would make a great couple,â Greta declared. âThey really are perfect for each other.â
Reenie shook her head. Greta loved trying to predict who would become a couple and who would break up. What if Chris and Natalie got together? sheâd ask. Or Gary and Randee?
âItâs hard to believe Liz and P.J. are related,â Reenie commented. âLiz is so cool. And heâs kind of weird.â
âDefinitely,â Sean agreed.
âHeâs not that weird,â Greta replied. âI think heâs cute.â
Reenie made a face. âYeah, but you think Ricky Shore is cute, too.â
âP.J. always acts as if heâs sick or something,â Sean said. âLike heâs about to faint.â
âIâve tried to talk to him,â Reenie told them. âBut all he says is yes or no in that low grunt of his. He always seems scared or something.â
âHeâs shy,â Greta said. âWhatâs wrong with that? Heâs new in town, at a new school, and he doesnât know anybody. Iâve talked to him, and I think heâs nice. Smart, too.â
âDoes Artie know heâs got competition?â Sean teased.
Reenie knew Sean was kidding. But Greta answered seriously. âI like P.J., thatâs all. I mean, I donât⦠wellâ¦â
âWhoa! Check it out!â Sean teased. âGreta is blushing!â
She couldnât possibly be interested in a strange guy like P.J., Reenie thought. Could she? It
was
true that lately, Artie and Greta had been fighting all the time.
Greta tapped Reenie on the shoulder and pointed to a green car. âLily Bancroft and Pete Goodwin. I never thought Iâd see
them
together.â
âTrying to change the subject?â Sean asked. Greta didnât answer him.
âWhere do P.J. and Liz live?â Reenie asked.
They looked at one another. No one knew.
âWhat do their parents do? How come they moved in the middle of the year?â Sean asked.
No one knew that, either.
A horn blared as a shiny red car pulled up beside them. The driver revved the engine.
âCool car,â Sean observed. âSounds like a V-6 that somebody has done a lot of work on. Iâll bet it can really move.â
âItâs Marc Bentley,â Greta said sourly. âAnd Artie.â
Artie rode shotgun. He rolled down the window. âYo! Howâs it going? How do you like Marcâs new wheels?â
âNice,â Sean said. âWhatâs it got?â
âV-6 with high-lift cam, oversize valves, and high-compression heads,â Artie bragged.
âWow.â Sean sounded impressed.
Marc climbed out of the car. âCome on. Iâll give you a ride.â He grinned at Reenie.
Marc is really good-looking, Reenie thought. He wore his dark brown hair in a ponytail. And she liked the faint scar that ran partway across his forehead and through his left eyebrow. It made him appear a little dangerousâand older, different from the other high school guys.
âCount me out,â Greta insisted.
Reenie shook her head. âIâve got to get home. Itâs late.â
Sean glanced at Reenie and Greta, then at Marc and Artie.
âYou donât want to go with them, do you?â Reenie whispered.
âI wouldnât mind seeing how that car runs,â Sean answered.
âLetâs go,â Artie called excitedly. âWeâll show you what this car can do.â
âHey, no big deal. Weâll just go around the block,â Marc promised.
âYeah, just around the block,â
