trying to find out who switched Lolaâs dog biscuits at the show,â Nancy said. âMaybe you can help us.â
âSorry,â Nicki said. Her helmet wiggled as she shook her head. âI have no idea who did it.â
Chip suddenly jumped up. She caught the strap of Nickiâs backpack between her teeth.
âChipâno!â Nancy scolded.
Too late. Chip pulled Nickiâs backpack out of the basket. Stuff spilled out as it tumbled to the sidewalk. Nancy noticed a wad of gum stuck to a tissue, a dollar bill, a pencil with a ladybug eraser, and a plastic comb.
âSorry,â Nancy said. But as she picked up the backpack, three more things fell out.
Three dog biscuits!
CHAPTER EIGHT
Itâs a Match!
Nancy grabbed Chipâs collar as she lunged for the biscuits. They looked just like Lick My Chops!
âWhere did you get those?â Nancy asked.
âThey must be from Saturday,â Nicki said calmly. âI forgot to clean out my backpack as usual.â
âBut theyâre Lick My Chops,â Nancy pointed out. âWhen you fed Lola you only fed her the fancy kind.â
âThose werenât for Lola,â explained Nicki. âAfter I told Maya I quit, I went to the Rollover Rescue tent to volunteer. Tracey gave me a bunch of biscuits to feed the shelter dogs.â
Nancy watched Chip crunch the biscuits on the sidewalk. They were Lick My Chops all right!
âYou can keep the biscuits.â Nicki sighed. âI still donât have a dog.â
Nicki adjusted her helmet and pedaled away. The girls stared down the block as she disappeared around a corner.
âHow do we know she was telling the truth?â Nancy wondered.
âToo bad we donât have a lie-detector machine,â George said.
âMaybe I can build one,â Bess said. âOr invent a shampoo that makes a liarâs hair turn green!â
âThanks, Bess,â Nancy said. âBut we still have other suspects to question.â
âThe Bow-Wow Brigade!â Bess and George said together.
The Clue Crew went straight to the Rollover Rescue Shelter. Once inside they saw volunteers in orange T-shirts busy at work. They werewalking dogs, cleaning cages, and showing adoptable dogs to possible owners.
Tracey and Vincent were there. When they saw the girls and Chip, they walked over.
âA brand-new puppy just came in,â Tracey said.
âHeâs a schnoodle,â Vincent said.
âA schnoodle?â Nancy asked.
âPart schnauzer, part poodle,â Tracey explained. âWould you like to meet him?â
Nancy was curious about the schnoodle. But she shook her head and said, âWe came to find out who switched Lolaâs dog biscuits before the fashion show.â
Nancy pulled the note out of her pocket. She held it up and said, âWe found this note in Lolaâs trailer. Did any of you write it?â
Tracey and Vincent stared at the note.
âThat is our stationery,â Tracey said. âBut I didnât write it.â
âMe neither,â said Vincent with a shrug. Then he pointed to a desk. âIf youâd like tovolunteer, just write your name on the sign-in sheet and weâll put you to work.â
The teenagers turned and walked away.
âSign-in sheet,â Nancy said. âThatâs it!â
âDonât tell me you want to volunteer now,â George said. âWe have a case to solve.â
âAnd Iâm not cleaning out any cages!â Bess said.
âYouâll see,â Nancy whispered. She waved her friends over to the desk. Then she ran her finger down the sign-in list until she found Traceyâs and Vincentâs signatures.
âWhat are you doing, Nancy?â Bess asked.
âComparing the note to Traceyâs and Vincentâs signatures,â Nancy explained. She held the note against the names and heaved a sigh. âThe handwritings donât
