Bess asked.
Nancy nodded and said, âThere were no crumbs, remember? A big dog like Huey could have eaten those biscuits in one gulp!â
âAnd when the basket was empty,â George said, âPeter might have replaced them with the dog biscuits he had in his pocket.â
âWhich could have been Lick My Chops!â Nancy put in.
âBut why wouldnât Peter say anything?â Bess asked. âHe saw how everyone was blaming us.â
âBecause Huey is the mayorâs dog,â Nancy said. âAnd Peter was responsible for him.â
âMaybe he was afraid to let anyone know,â said George.
Nancy remembered how nervous Peter had acted in the school yard. No wonder he didnât want to talk about Huey!
âI do think Huey ate the biscuits,â Nancy said. âBut before we accuse him, we have to do a little research.â
âResearch on what?â George asked.
âOn dogs!â Nancy replied with a smile.
The Clue Crew raced to their headquarters. George found a website about different dog breeds. They couldnât remember the type of dog Huey was, but they remembered what he looked like.
âThatâs him!â Nancy said. She pointed to a big black dog on the screen.
âThatâs a Newfoundland,â Bess said, reading carefully. âNewfie for short.â
âIt says they used to help fishermen pull in their nets,â George went on. âAnd that they love water.â
âIt also says Newfies drool in long, sticky ropes,â Nancy added.
âCan you imagine having a dog like that?â said Bess. âHe probably drools on everythingâfurniture, the floorââ
âThe floor!â Nancy said. âMaybe thatâs what that sticky puddle in Lolaâs trailer was.â
âYou mean that was Hueyâs drool?â Bess asked. She scrunched up her nose. âWhat else does it say about Eww-fies, I mean, Newfies?â
George read out loud: âNewfiesâ coats have long black hairs. They shed often, too.â
âI wonder if Huey left hairs in the trailer too,â Nancy said.
âWonder no more!â exclaimed Bess.
âHuh?â George said.
Bess ran to her jacket. She pulled her Hairy Fairy Wand from her pocket.
âI used this right after we were in Lolaâs trailer, remember?â Bess said. âHueyâs hairs could be on it.â
The Clue Crew examined the sticky whitetape on the Hairy Fairy. There were lots of light hairsâjust like Lolaâs. There were also long, thick black hairsâjust like Hueyâs!
âMaya and her parents have blond hair,â said Nancy. âSo the black hairs must be Hueyâs!â
âGood work, Gizmo Girl!â George said.
âThanks!â Bess said.
âLetâs question our new suspect,â Nancy suggested. âPeter Patino.â
Nancy found Peter Patinoâs address in the River Heights Elementary School yearbook. It was three blocks away.
When the girls reached the Patino house, they found Peter in his front yard. Huey was also in the yard. He was sitting in a plastic kiddie pool, covered with soapsuds!
âPeterâs giving Huey a bath,â Bess whispered. âItâs a good thing Newfies like water.â
Peter stopped scrubbing as the girls walked over.
âHi, Peter,â Nancy said. âHi, Huey.â
The girls stepped back as Huey panted.
His dog breath was pretty funky!
âMayor Strong asked me to wash Huey,â said Peter. âIt took four dog biscuits to get him into the bath.â
âWhat kind of dog biscuits?â Nancy asked. âLick My Chops . . . or Bone Appetit?â
Peter froze with his hands on Hueyâs wet coat. âI donât remember,â he said. âDog biscuits are dog biscuits.â
âNot to Lola,â George said. âDid Huey eat her fancy biscuits before the fashion show?â
âNuh-uh,â
