âThanks!â she said, waving to the directors. âWeâll be back in a jiffy.â
âA jiffy? Did you actually say weâd be back in a jiffy?â Lexi groaned as they started hunting through the cabinets in Kylieâs kitchen. âI have no idea how weâre going to bake and decorate these cupcakes. This could take us days to come up withânot a jiffy!â
âIâm not even sure how long a jiffy is,â Delaney admitted.
âIt doesnât matter. We just need to focus,â Kylie replied. âSomebody toss out some ideas.â
âThe pageant lady said itâs just as important to be beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside,â Delaney suggested. âSo maybe thatâs what our cupcake needs to be.â
Kylie raised an eyebrow. âOkay, I like where youâre going with this.â
âWhere are you going with this?â Sadie asked.
âIâm just saying it would be cool if we could stuff the cupcakes with something pretty,â Delaney explained.
Lexiâs eyes lit up. âLike a cupcake inside a cupcake!â
âThatâs brilliant!â Kylie shouted. âWe could bake a mini cake and put it inside the cupcake. So when you bite inâ¦â
âItâs beautiful. Oh, I love it,â Lexi said.
âTalk to me about flavors, Jenna,â Kylie said. âSomething special. Something differentâ¦â
âSomething pink,â Delaney weighed in. âLike that pink outfit Fitzy had on.â
Jenna tapped a finger to her chin. âWe could do a pink velvet and bake a mini white cake inside. Maybe in a star shape for Miss New England Shooting Starz.â
âHow do we do that?â Sadie asked. âWeâve never done a shape inside a cupcake before.â
âEasy-peasy,â Kylie said, flipping through her recipe collection. âI saw something like this before and wanted to try it.â She held up a page. âWe bake the white cake first and use a mini cookie cutter to make the stars. Then we put them in the pink velvet batter and they bake right inside the cupcakes.â
âWhat do we think of white chocolate buttercream?â Jenna asked, smacking her lips together. She did her best Fitzy impression: âIs it fabâ¦or drab? Yumâ¦or hum-drum?â
â Yum ! â the girls shouted unanimously.
âLetâs keep it simple on top,â Lexi added. âGold-fondant stars sprinkled with luster dust. Beautiful and elegant, just like a pageant queen.â
âI think weâve got a plan,â Kylie said, climbing a step stool to retrieve the food coloring from the top shelf of the cupboard.
âI bet Connecticut Cupcakes has a plan too,â Delaney reminded them. âAnd a good one.â
âNot as good as ours,â Kylie insisted. âLaura and Fitzy are gonna love this.â She opened the fridge and handed a dozen eggs to Sadie.
âI can take a hint,â Sadie said, tying an apron around her waist. âItâs time to get cracking!â

When Kylieâs mom dropped the girls off at the pageant office, a big, pink truck with the letters CC on it was already parked in front.
âConnecticut Cupcakes,â Kylie said with a sigh. âThey beat us to it.â
âOf course they did,â Sadie grumped. âAnd they always have to make an entrance.â She pointed to a large box on wheels that two bakery assistants were rolling up the walkway.
âWhat do you suppose is in there?â Lexi asked. âI hate surprises. Iâd rather know what weâre going up against.â
âA ten-ton cupcake?â Delaney guessed.
âWell, thereâs only one way to find out,â Jenna said. âFollow my lead, guysâ¦â
She ran up to the two men dressed in white aprons. They were trying desperately to roll the box over the curb.
â Hola ! â Jenna said
