sweetly. â Habla usted español ? â
The workers stopped and stared. âUm, no, sorry. Only English.â
Jenna continued, â Estoy perdido. Dónde está Holly Lane ? â
âI think sheâs lost,â one worker said to the other. âGo straight for about two blocks, then take a left. At the stop sign, make a right. Then an immediate left at the Sunoco station. Thatâs Holly Lane.â
Jenna shrugged. â No comprendo .â
âWell, sorry. We canât help you. Our bosses are in there having a meeting, and we gotta get this thing inside.â
â Waaaaah ! â Delaney suddenly ran up behind Jenna, pretending to cry hysterically. She sobbed on her friendâs shoulder.
âOkay, okay! Donât cry!â The first worker wiped his brow with a handkerchief. âWeâll help you get where youâre going.â
â Muchas gracias ! â Jenna said, shaking his hand.
The workers left the box at the curb and went back to the truck to get a map out of the glove compartment. While Jenna and Delaney distracted them, Kylie, Sadie, and Lexi snuck behind the box. âThe sides are all taped shut!â Lexi whispered.
âSadie, youâre tall. Crack open the lid and peek inside.â
Sadie stood on her tiptoesâthe box was almost six feet tall!
âWell? What do you see?â Kylie whispered.
Sadieâs eyes grew wide. âIt canât be.â
âWhat? What?â Lexi asked frantically. âWhat is it?â
âItâs a gown,â Sadie replied. âA gown made entirely of mini cupcakes.â
âNo way,â Kylie exclaimed. âWe made a dozen cupcakes with stars in them, and they made a pageant gown?â
âWorse. Itâs bright pink,â Sadie replied. âFitzy is gonna love it. We donât stand a chance.â She noticed that Delaney was waving them off.
âQuick! We gotta get out of here,â Sadie said, grabbing Kylie and Lexi and ducking behind a tree.
The workers returned and hoisted the box over the curb, rolling it up to the office entrance.
Jenna studied Kylie, Sadie, and Lexiâs long faces. âThat bad?â
âWorse,â Lexi said. âThey made a huge presentationâa pageant gown made of cupcakes! Weâll embarrass ourselves if we show Laura and Fitzy what we made.â
âI agree with Lex,â Kylie said. âI donât think we can go in there.â
Jenna shook her head. âRemember what Laura said: itâs not always appearances that count. I say we do it. Weâre here anywayâ¦â
âOkay,â Kylie relented. âBut I have an awful feeling about this.â
This time, when Hershey greeted them at the door, she looked a little frazzled. Her hair was tousled, and she seemed out of breath.
âOh, hi, guys,â she said. âYou might want to think twice about coming in right this secondâ¦â
Kylie heard shouting from the office and the sound of something crashing. âIs everything okay, Hershey?â she asked.
âKinda,â Hershey replied. âWell, not really. The Connecticut Cupcakes sisters are having a bit of a brouhaha.â
âWhatâs a broo-ha-ha?â Delaney asked. âIs that like a party? Can we come?â
âItâs an argument, and Iâm not surprised,â Lexi said, recalling how the two had feuded with each other at Battle of the Bakers . âCece and Chloe really push each otherâs buttons.â
âOh, you know them? Maybe you could come in and help me referee,â Hershey said, taking Lexi by the arm. âIâd appreciate it. Theyâre scaring me.â
Lexi peeked in the office. There were the two cupcake sisters, chasing each other around the room.
âI told you this was an awful idea,â Chloe said, complaining. âBut do you ever listen? Noooooo ! â
Cece threw a couch pillow at her sisterâs
