head. âIt was a brilliant ideaâuntil you forgot to top the mini cupcakes with edible pearls like we discussed. You ruined my display.â
âI had errands to run,â Chloe insisted. âI thought you would handle it.â
âLadies! Ladies!â Hershey held up her hand. âIâm sure itâs fine. Laura and Fitzy will be out in a sec if youâll just take a seat.â
Cece and Chloe ignored her and kept right on fighting.
âErrands? What errands? Honestly, all you think about is shopping,â Cece said, criticizing her younger sister. âYou forget weâre running a business.â
âIâm leaving you in charge while I go get the directors,â Hershey told Lexi. âBe careful!â
Lexi just stood there. She had no idea what to do or say to make the pair stop arguing. They reminded her of two little girls squabbling over a toy in the sandbox.
She glanced over at her fellow cupcake clubbers and mouthed the words âHelp me.â
âHey! Escuchen ! â Jenna came to her rescue. The sisters stopped and stared. âListen up! You two need to cool it!â
âYeah,â Lexi said, trying to calm them down. âYour cupcake gown rocks. You both did an amazing job, so just stop fighting about it.â
Cece looked shocked. âHow do you know we made a cupcake gown? Itâs all boxed up. You better not have touched itâ¦â
âUm, she means she can imagine how gorgeous it is.â Kylie tried to cover for her friend. âLexi has a very vivid imagination.â
âBut how did you know we made a gown?â Chloe asked. âWe never told you that.â
âSheâs psychic,â Delaney piped up. âShe reads palms and crystal balls and stuff.â
Chloeâs mouth fell open. âSeriously? You see the future?â
âI guess,â Lexi said, blushing. âI mean, sure.â
Chloe stuck her palm under Lexiâs nose. âCan you tell my future? Is my boyfriend finally going to pop the question over dinner tonight?â
Lexi hemmed and hawed. âWell, it might possibly happen definitely.â
âI told you! I told you!â Chloe started jumping up and down. Then she hugged Lexi. âThis is the best news! I have to go out and buy a new outfit for the proposal.â
Cece looked even madder. âYou are not going shopping. We have a dozen orders due tomorrow.â
Chloe picked up her purse and waved. âToodles! Misters before sisters!â And just like that, she swept out the door.
âOne down, one to go,â Sadie whispered to Lexi. âGood job!â
âWell, who needs her?â Cece sniffed. âI can make the presentation by myself.â
When Laura and Fitzy reappeared, she introduced herself and unveiled her cupcake display. âImpressive, donât you think?â she asked the directors. âItâs a gown made entirely out of cupcakes!â
Fitzy circled around and around the display, admiring it from every angle. âItâs certainly large. And it really looks like something youâd see on a pageant runway.â
âI knew youâd love it. So Iâll send you my invoice in the a.m. and we can get working on the real display for your pageant.â
âJust a second!â Kylie protested. âWe get a turn to show our cupcakes too. We baked a whole second batch.â
Cece looked down at the small, white box Lexi was holding and snickered. âThatâs your presentation? Pullease!â
Lexi opened it and took out a single cupcake. She handed it to Laura. âIt represents everything you asked for. Itâs beautiful inside and out,â she explained.
Laura took a biteâ¦and beamed. âIs that a star I see? Right inside the cupcake?â
âIt is,â Kylie said proudly. Then she shot Cece a look. âImpressive. Donât you think?â
âI think the cupcake gown will
