Romeo!â
âI
donât know if we want you to appear in the spring play at all!â Mr. Riordan said, shaking his head. âThat kind of behaviorââ
âIt was a joke!â Danny protested.
âWeâre all laughing our heads off,â the teacher replied sarcastically. âLetâs start up the music again, okay?â He turned and headed over to the CD player.
Selena decided to get some fresh air. She crossed the room to the patio door.
âI canât believe you used to go out with that guy,â said a deep voice in her ear.
Startled, Selena dropped her hand from the doorknob. She turned to see Eddyâs handsome face. âHow did you know about me and Danny?â she demanded.
âOh, I must have heard it from one of the other kids,â Eddy replied. He gazed at her, and Selena felt tongue-tied by the intensity of his dark eyes.
âMr. Riordan is signaling me again,â Eddy told her. âHe wants me to meet everyone in the drama club!â His dark eyes flashed. âBut Iâll talk to you later, Selena.â
Selena watched Eddy leave.
Weird,
she thought.
Heâs so intense, but I like him anyway. At least heâs more mature than Danny
.
Danny. Selena frowned, thinking of his dumb stunt. She felt so embarrassed that she had fallen for it. Selena gazed around the room. Were kids still laughing at her?
Maybe Iâll just go home,
she thought.
She wandered over to the refreshment table. âHave you seen Katy?â she asked Alison.
âShe was here a while ago,â Alison replied. âI think sheâs in the kitchen with Mr. Riordan.â
Selena started for the kitchen, but Alison stopped her.
âYou were awesome in this play,â Alison said, staring intently at Selena. âAnd I know youâll probably get the part of Juliet.â She stopped and took a deep breath. âBut I want you to know Iâm trying out too,â she finished in a rush.
âWell, of course,â Selena said, surprised. She and Alison had always had a good-natured competition for parts, and Selena expected it to continue. âWhy should the spring play be any different?â
Katy came through the kitchen into the living room. She approached the refreshment table and grabbed a handful of peanuts. âWhatâs up?â she greeted Selena and Alison.
âI think I want to go home,â Selena told her. âItâs getting late and Iâm starting to crash. Iâm always so wiped after a performance.â
âOkay. I guess Iâm ready to leave too,â Katyshrugged. âJust let me get my keys. I left them in my bag in the other room.â
âIâll wait for you outside,â Selena decided. She thanked Mr. Riordan for the party, then crossed to the front door. She stepped outside into the cold air.
Overhead, a million stars sparkled in the black night sky. Selena felt a chill. She had the weirdest feelingâas if the stars were all eyes, a million eyes staring down at her.
All of Katyâs stalker talk is making me paranoid!
she told herself, shaking the feeling away.
She started down the pathâbut stopped as a shadow swept over her.
A large figure stepped out of the shadows to block her way.
âWhere are you going?â Dannyâs husky voice demanded.
âHome!â Selena answered coldly. She was in no mood for Danny after the trick he had pulled.
âFine,â Danny said. âBut youâre going home with
me.â
âIn your dreams,â Selena snapped. âWhy would I go anywhere with you? Donât you get it? I donât want to get back together!â
Danny grabbed her arm roughly. âSelenaââ he pleaded.
Selena yanked her arm away. âJust leave me alone!â she cried.
âI only want to drive you home,â Danny insisted, his voice rising.
âHey, whatâs going on?â cried another voice. Selena glanced up
