to see Jake standing at the edge of the walk.
âButt out!â Danny snarled. He grabbed for Selena again.
âWhoa!â Jake grabbed Dannyâs shirt and spun him around.
âWhatâs your problem? Leave her alone!â Jake demanded.
âMind your own business!â Danny growled.
âSelena is
my
friend!â Jake argued. âIf she needs a ride,
Iâll
take her home!â
Every guy I know has gone nuts!
Selena decided.
Danny shoved Jake with all his strength.
Jake shot Selena a startled look as he stumbled back onto the brick walkway. And toppled over.
âOhhh!â Selena uttered a low cry as Jakeâs head hit the pavement hard, with a dull
thunk
.
Jake sprawled on his back on the sidewalk.
He didnât move.

âJ ake!â Selena cried.
âGet up!â Danny ordered, breathing hard as he stood over Jakeâs unmoving body. âGet up!â
Jake stirred. He moaned and slowly pulled himself to his feet.
Selena started toward him. But Jake launched himself at Dannyâs legs, pulling the bigger boy down.
As Selena watched in horror, the two boys rolled over and over, pounding each other frantically with their fists.
âStop! Stop it!â she screamed.
A jagged cut already covered Jakeâs forehead. Dannyâs nose began to spurt blood.
Selena grabbed the back of Jakeâs shirt and yanked with both hands. Using all her strength, she managed to pull him away from Danny. Before the boys could begin again, she stepped between them.
âGet out of the way!â Jake warned, wiping blood from his forehead, his chest heaving.
âNo!â Selena insisted. âJake, what do you think youâre doing?â
Jakeâs eyes had looked glazed, but now they snapped into focus. âIâmâIâm sorry,â he muttered.
âYouâre sorry, okay,â Danny snarled. âYouâre so sorry, youâre pitiful!â
âShut up! Just shut up!â Selena demanded. âYou guys are both crazy! Iâm going home with Katy. I donât need a ride from anyone! And even if I did, I wouldnât take it from either one of you!â
Danny stared at her for a long moment, struggling to catch his breath. Then he spun around and strode back to the house. He pushed past Katy, who had just appeared on the porch.
âWhatâs up?â she asked, hurrying down to Selena and Jake. âDid Danny get a nosebleed?â
âHe tripped,â Jake muttered bitterly.
Katy stared at him for a moment. âSelena?â she asked.
âIâll tell you in the car.â Selena sighed wearily.
Jake followed the girls to Katyâs car. âIâm sorry, Moon,â he repeated. âYou know I canât stand Danny.â
âThatâs no excuse.â
âBut heâs such a jerk!â Jake insisted.
Selena sighed. âI know.â
Katy unlocked the car doors and Selena slid into the passenger seat. Jake stood holding her door.
âDanny thinks he can always be the star. He thinks heâll be Romeo in the spring play,â Jake said. âBut he wonât. Iâd rather see him dead.â
Selena gasped and gazed up at him. He looked so pale and angry in the cold moonlight. âYou donât really mean that, Jake. Do you?
Do
you?â
He turned and walked away without answering.

A distant ringing awakened Selena at dawn the next morning. She glanced at her clock radio and saw that it was five A.M. It took her a moment longer to realize that the ringing came from her bedside phone.
She groggily reached for it. âHello?â she mumbled.
âWe were together last night,â whispered a voice.
âHuh?â Selena choked out.
âIâm watching you,â the voice whispered hoarsely. âIâm always watching you, Selena.â
âHey, waitâ!â Selena cried.
âSoon weâll be together
