and told him that my mom was going to freak. He said he would like to meet with my mom and ask her permission to date me. That was so sweet! It made my heart pound and I knew it was love. I also knew that I could never introduce him to my family. They would never understand.
That weekend, I met Ben at a park down the street from my house. It hardly ever got used since the neighborhood was full of old people my grandparents’ age. We had the entire place to ourselves. I got there first and waited nervously on a bench for him, where I could see the entrance.
Ben showed up and I watched him walk toward me with a Cheshire cat grin on his beautiful face. I sat there with him seated beside me, switching between gawking at him, to loving him, to being completely unsure of our relationship. He ended the staring contest by telling me how much he had missed me, and how he couldn’t stop thinking about me.
I was on cloud nine by the time he stopped talking. It was then my turn to tell him how I was feeling and I did, leaving out all the doubts I was feeling. We spent the entire evening cuddled on a park bench, just talking. There wasn’t anything we didn’t talk about.
I ended up finding out a lot about Ben that evening. He was twenty-five-years old! That is a full-fledged seven years older than me, which seemed like a lot at the time. But he told me it wouldn’t be a problem. I was, after all, a legal adult—no matter what my grandparents said. I also learned that he had a full teaching contract at a college, which was only two hours away, but in an entirely different state. The job would start in February.
When the evening was over, I told Ben that I couldn’t kiss him because I had a sore throat and didn’t want him to get sick. It was a total lie. I just didn’t want to experience the tingles throughout my body for the rest of the night like I had felt before. I didn’t know how to handle all of that.
We continued to date and get to know each other for the month of January. We got to practice plenty of kissing and I now knew for certain that I wasn’t a lesbian. Whew! Kissing was wonderful and caused so many amazing tingles in my body. Tingles I didn’t yet know how to deal with.
Ben was baffled that I didn’t know most of the bands he had grown up with. I blamed it on our age difference, but in reality, it was because my grandma hadn’t allowed us to listen to anything except the oldies stations, which played songs from the fifties and sixties—songs that no one in my age group would even have heard of.

It was almost two in the morning and I had to get to bed. I had to work the next day, but the words were flying through my brain. I just couldn’t stop. I couldn’t remember a time when the words had come to me so easily. I rubbed my hands back and forth, and then stretched out my fingers to remove the kinks.

I asked Ben why he didn’t continue to work at the local high school, where he had been substituting for the last few years, and he said there had been a misunderstanding with a female student. She had accused him of coming on to her and the administration had kindly asked him to leave. I thought that was terrible. Mr. Champion would never treat a female student inappropriately. There was no evidence of his behavior, so they had no legal standing, but it was enough for them to drop him from their substitution list and he would never be offered a contract.
My birthday was at the end of January and Ben had explained that he had planned an entire evening for us! I was excited to finally have a boyfriend that I could spend my birthday with! We were already pretty much inseparable.
My family still didn’t know about us, but that didn’t stop me from secretly meeting him.
On my birthday, Ben took me to this expensive restaurant right on the water in the next town over. He was acting really nervous and I felt like something was going on. I was wondering if he was going to break up with me
