name is Kerrie Dillon. She’s been working for us about three months now.” Ruth told Earl that it had only been two. “All right then, two. That’s about all we know of her other than she’s not much of a maid. Very nice young woman. Polite and helps as much as she can, but not cut out for servitude.”
It was on the tip of his tongue to ask why she’d been there for two months if she was terrible at her job when his father came in with the family attorney, Hayden Carney. Neither of them spoke to the other people in the room; it was as if they didn’t see them. Which, Landon was pretty sure they didn’t.
“Your mother has had to go out, so we’ll have to reschedule this for tomorrow. I just can’t deal with you any more today either. I’ll expect a more pleasant talk tomorrow, and for you to have the answers I want.” Landon asked Ruth for a cooler cloth and ignored his father when he spoke again. “We’re going to resolve this, Landon. I don’t want to hear from you how you have your own life. You’re our son and that’s all there is to it. It’s not as if we’ve asked anything of you.”
Landon looked at his grandda. He knew that he didn’t need it, but he was asking for permission to see if this was done. At grandda’s short nod, Landon looked at his father.
“I’m done.” Hayden opened his mouth to speak, and Landon stood up, still holding Kerrie in his arms. “I said I’m done. I will not be moving back here to live in this house. I never liked it when I had to live here. And in the event that you don’t remember it, you said I was never going to be welcome here as anything other than a guest, if that. I most certainly will not marry that woman you suggested...no, you demanded…that I marry. I won’t be going to any engagement party that you’ve planned, and I will never, so long as I live, act like we’re a loving and close family. Nothing is worth all of that. So, if you’ll excuse me, or even if you won’t, I’m leaving.”
“You ungrateful bastard.” Landon just smiled at his dad as he held the woman in his arms. He realized when looking down at her that she was awake, but didn’t really feel the need to let her go. Besides, she had the most beautiful eyes he’d ever seen. His father screamed at him to look at him when he was speaking to him. “Landon, so help me, I will never speak to you again if you don’t do this.”
“And up until now, Father, you’ve had conversations with me how many times? We’ve not spoken in more years than I can remember, so I’m sure I won’t miss it in the future. And, just so you know, I’ve found that I like it that way.” The woman in his arms struggled, and he sat her on her feet but didn’t let her go just yet. “I don’t want to be contacted by you again. Not for any reason.”
“I’m your father, by God.” Landon said nothing, feeling better than he had in years. “This merger will help both our families. They’re going to benefit with the name of Logan, and I’ll get a piece of the business. And just because you don’t care about money, you’ll be surprised to know the rest of the world does. There is no way you can turn this down. Stop being a fool. I’ve offered you more than I wanted to give you.”
“And you can shove that up your ass.”
His father took a step from him, and Kerrie laughed. Her timing could not have been worse for her, Landon supposed. But he thought it was funny.
Just as his father drew back his hand to no doubt hit Kerrie, Landon grabbed it before he could touch her. As he stood there holding his father’s hand in his fist, Landon could see the pain on his face and how much his father really hated him. And when he looked at Kerrie, as if he only just realized she was beneath him, Landon could almost feel the shift of his father’s anger to her. Jerking his hand from his, his father straightened his suit and glared at her.
“You’re fired.” He wasn’t sure if he meant her or him,
