but either way, neither of them were going to stick around to find out. “Get your ass out of my house, and don’t expect to be paid for this either. Nor will I give you a recommendation, so don’t even ask.”
“Okay, that’s fine by me.” Kerrie looked at Landon after smiling at his father. “Can I get a ride into town, please? I don’t have a car. I just need to gather up my shit and I’ll be ready to go.”
“Of course.” Grandda laughed too, but like Kerrie, no one heard him. Landon looked at his father when Kerrie left him to get her things. “Don’t contact me again. We’re finished.”
“You’re my son, damn it, and it’s high time you started to act like it. I will not tolerate your acting like you’re not a Logan. It’s bad enough that I have to read about your stupidity in the paper when you go out and fleece those people. The least you could do is change your fucking name when you do that, but you will do this. Or so help me, Landon, you’ll regret it.” Landon glanced at his grandda and then back at his dad when he continued. “I mean it, Landon. You’re going to regret this. Those men you work with, they’ll be looking to your ghost for answers when I’m finished with you. Just do as you’re told and no one has to get hurt.”
“You’re a piece of work, Father. You know that? Ever since my birthday when I turned nine, you’ve ignored me and didn’t have a thing to do with me until today. And now when it suits you, when you finally have a purpose for my existence, you call me up and make demands. Demands that suit you and make my life hell. Again.” Landon laughed. “Well, you reap what you sow, old man, and I’m over you and Mother. As I said before, do not contact me again.”
As he made his way to the front of the house, Earl and Grandda right behind him, he saw that Kerrie was waiting on him. Taking her bag from her, he looked around the house, what of it that he could see, and wondered how the hell they’d accumulated so much in way of things but were still poor. Looking at his father again, Landon could almost feel sorry for him. Instead of saying anything, he moved out of the house and onto the porch that more than likely had never been enjoyed by any of the people on the inside.
“You’ll be hearing from my attorney, Landon. And soon too. If you think this is over, then you’re stupider than I thought you were.” Kerrie looked at him now, her face full of humor, and when she winked at him, he smiled. “Are you listening to me, Landon? I’m going to get what I want. I always do.”
“Good luck with that one.” Landon helped Kerrie into his truck. Then he moved to the other side to get in as he spoke again to his father. “But if I were you, I’d look into a few things. Such as the fact that I don’t need your money, and haven’t for a good long time. Not that I wanted it in the first place. I never did. And I have the means and the ways to ruin you in a heartbeat if you fuck with me. I’m not that nine-year-old that you nearly destroyed. You might want to remember that in the future.”
Landon had no idea what his father said as Landon got into his truck and started it. He thought about taking a deep breath before he moved down the drive, but decided that he didn’t want to spend another minute there. And he didn’t want to breathe in any more of the air surrounding them.
As soon as they were on the main street, the shaking began. Pulling over into an abandoned lot, he sat there behind the wheel for several seconds before he felt the soft touch at his hand. He looked over at Kerrie, and all he could think about was comfort. But not in the way that most had in mind. He needed her, not a hug.
She was there. Right there, and Landon pulled her to him and kissed her. Brutally. As he moved across the seat, jerking her to his lap, all he could think about was taking something, anything. When she was on his lap, her blouse torn open, she grabbed his hair
