the whole thing up about being in a singing group called the Cheetah Girls. Iâm sure she must have put that in her reports. Sheâs always writing things down when she visits.
âUm, okay, lemme see,â I say, trying to be nice to Mrs. Tattle. âIâll sing you the song that Bubbles wrote.â
âBubbles?â Mrs. Tattle asks, like sheâs kinda curious.
âOh, sheâs the leader of our groupâthatâs her nickname. Her real name is Galleria Garibaldi.â
âOh,â Mrs. Tattle says, nodding her head. âThatâs an interesting name.â
âUm, yeah, her mother is a fashion designer, and she named Bubbles, um, Galleria, after the mall in Houston,â I say. I start giggling, warming up to Mrs. Tattle because I see her eyes sparkling a little. âHer father is Italianâfrom Italyâso thatâs where she got her last name.â
âYesâGaribaldi was a popular hero in Italy,â Mrs. Tattle says.
I just keep smiling, because Iâm not sure about Italian history. Iâd better ask Bubbles before I go blabbing my mouth, so I decide Iâd better sing and get it over with. âUm, okay, hereâs the song that Bubbles wrote. Itâs called, âWanna-be Stars in the Jiggy Jungle.ââ
âOh, thatâs cute!â Mrs. Tattle says, scribbing stuff down in a folderâwhich I know is my case file.
I smile at Twinkie. She loves to join in on the chorus of this song. I clear my throat and start singing the first verse:
        â
Some people walk with a panther
       Â
or strike a buffalo stance
       Â
that makes you wanna dance
.
       Â
Other people flip the script
       Â
on the day of the jackal
       Â
thatâll make you cackle
.
       Â
But peeps like me
       Â
got the Cheetah Girl groove
       Â
that makes your body move
       Â
like wanna-be stars in the jiggy jungle
.
       Â
The jiggy jiggy jungle
!
       Â
The jiggy jiggy jungle
!â
Sure enough, Twinkie and Topwe join in for the chorus and the B verse, making a whole lot of noiseâbut at least itâs fun:
        â
So donât make me bungle
       Â
my chance to rise for the prize
       Â
and show you who we are
       Â
in the jiggy jiggy jungle
!
       Â
The jiggy jiggy jungle
!â
Mrs. Tattle starts clapping enthusiastically. Iâm so glad that I made her feel better. Thatâs what I love most about singingâseeing how happy it makes people.
âWhere
is
the jiggy jungle?â Mrs. Tattle asks me. I can tell she really is interested now.
âBubbles says itâs this magical, cheetah-licious place inside of every dangerous, scary, crowded city, where dreams come trueâoh, and where every cheetah has its day.â I get embarrassed, because I suddenly realize maybe Mrs. Tattle thinks the whole thing is kinda cuckoo.
But instead, she looks at me with tiny tears forming in her eyes. âIâm so glad you found a friend like Bubbles,â Mrs. Tattle says softly. Then she adds hesitantly, âI remember reading in the reports that you had trouble connecting with other kids.â
That makes me embarrassed. I didnât know one of the caseworkers put that in their report! They are so
nosy
!
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Mrs. Bosco nodding her head. âYes, thatâs right. Dorinda has really changed a lot, now that she is in this group with the Cheetah Girls.â
âThis is really great, Dorinda,â Mrs. Tattle exclaims.
I guess
