Drew.”
Chapter 17
No amount of water can wash away what I feel. I try to scrub it away but to no avail.
Stepping out of the shower, I wrap myself in a towel before padding barefoot to my room. Janey sits on the end of the bed with tears in her eyes.
“What’s wrong?” Moving toward her, I drop to my knees in front of her. Gripping her face in my hands, I force her to look at me.
“I’m tired of hearing all the things people say about you! It’s all over school, Hannah. They say awful things and when I say something back, it turns into a fight.” Her tears rip a piece of my heart open.
I know she has it rough at school. Alan and Brian made sure that this whole town knew I was the slut to hate. I didn’t care when it was just me, but now they’re dragging Janey into it, too.
“I’m sorry you have to deal with that. It’s my fault.” Janey shakes her head free of my hands before she looks at me again.
“No Hannah! It isn’t your fault! It’s their fault. They make up lies and spread it like wildfire. How can anyone believe those liars?” Swallowing hard, I stand to move to sit on the bed next to her.
“Look. You’re smart. You’re making straight A’s, Janey. I know that people can be cruel and hurtful, but you are smarter than that. Don’t let them ruin what you have going for you. You have colleges that want to help you.” Janey is a smart girl. She always has been. Making something of herself was never an issue.
I always knew that if anyone could make it out of here it would be Janey.
“You have one more, Janey. One more semester, and you can get out of this town.” Wiping the tears from her eyes, she smiles at me.
“You can do it too, Han. You’re as smart as I am. I know you can do it.” Smiling back at her, I tuck her hair behind her ear. If only I could.
“One day. One day we won’t have to hear a word from any of these assholes in this town.” My phone rings before I grab it and answer.
“Hello?” I can hear crying on the other end of the line before I realize who it is.
“We’re closed tonight. Take the night off. Have your ass here tomorrow at seven.” Alan’s tears fill me with a sick joy that it shouldn’t. A smile creeps across my face as the realization of what is happening takes hold of me.
The line goes dead but pure adrenalin courses through my veins.
“Looks like I have the night off. Do you want to hit the mall?” Looking over at Janey, her smile lights up my life.
“Yes!” She squeals before jumping on the bed. I stand up just in time to catch her in a hug.
I’ll be so happy when she doesn’t have to deal with anymore of this.
Chapter 18
“Those are so cute!” Janey dances around looking at the dresses. I know she has a big school dance coming up and I’ve been saving to get her the dress she wanted.
“Look at that one. It’s purple, your favorite color.” Nudging her with my arm, she smiles before she takes off to look at it.
My heart fills with joy as I watch her. This is the way she deserves to feel all the time. Anguish and torment don’t belong to her. She was meant for better things.
She twirls around with a dress in her hands before she rushes toward me.
“Can I try it on?” Nodding my head, she squeals before rushing toward the dressing rooms.
I wander around looking at the other dresses waiting on her to come out to show me.
“You thinking of going to a dance?” His voice is rough and sexy as hell behind me.
Turning slowly, my eyes travel over the sexy body of Drew.
“I don’t dance.” Turning my head back to what I was doing, his hand grabs my face.
“Don’t look away from me. It’s annoying.” The firmness in his voice makes me shiver.
The smile that creeps over his beautiful features makes it
