room, vaguely uneasy but with no reason why.
“Are you okay?”
“Sure, why?”
“Craig was up at Shady’s last night. He said that he was going to take care of you. You need to be careful!”
“Dave, I’m sure that he’s just trying to blow smoke up everyone’s ass.”
“And I’m sure he’s not! Honey, you didn’t see him last night. He’s pissed because that write-up got his ass canned.”
“Okay,” she sighed. She still didn’t think that anything would come of it, but she didn’t want to be rude. “Thanks for letting me know. I’ll be careful.”
She hung up the phone, but as soon as she did, the damned thing rang again as well as her house phone. It was more of her coworkers, giving her the same warning. What the hell? She began deleting messages on both phones. If Dallas heard those, he’d never get out of her house.
She and her third cup of coffee went to the computer so she could begin sending her reports off to the office. In the process, she began reading her e-mails. After deleting the ones she knew were junk, she began to sift through the work ones. There was an e-mail from Craig at the top of the list. Dammit. She had to open it and read it quickly in case Dallas came back.
CRISTAL,
You fucking bitch! If it’s the last thing I ever do, I’ll see you burn in hell. I can’t believe you made me lose my fucking job. You won’t see it coming, but I will kill you.
“What the fuck is that?” Oh shit! How had he snuck up on her like that? She moved the mouse to delete the message but was stopped. “Don’t you dare!”
“Dallas? What are you doing here? I thought you’d left.” She was going to assume her racing heart was because of the letter, not his presence.
He dropped a plastic pharmacy bag on the desk as he read over the message again. “You still don’t think he means you any harm?”
“I think he’s trying to scare me.”
“Apparently not well enough if you’re not willing to take this shit seriously.” He took the laptop away from her and forwarded the message to Reno and Ry with a note to call him if there were any questions.
“Go pack a bag.” He didn’t plan on listening to her shit this time. He’d thought about it a lot since he’d left that morning. She’d shown a lot of submissive tendencies last night, and he was glad. He wouldn’t have to bullshit her with a normal façade.
“I’ve told you,” she began, but wasn’t able to finish her statement. He pinned her to the swivel chair.
“I’m not asking you if you want to go. I’m telling you to get your shit together, or I can take you with just the clothes on your back. Your choice.”
“Bastard!” She hissed as she ducked under his arm and headed to her bedroom. She didn’t want to leave the safety of her home. She didn’t want to be in his home. She grabbed her overnight bag and brought just enough clothes for a day or two, and nothing that he would consider sexy. After tossing some toiletries into the bag, she met him in the kitchen where he was washing her coffee cup and coffee pot.
“Ready?”
“If I don’t get a choice in the matter, I guess so.”
“You don’t.” He had set his overnight bag on the kitchen table along with the pharmacy bag. “I took the bike home this morning and brought my truck.”
“Oh goody.” He swatted her ass as he pushed her toward the sliding glass door. “I’ll make sure the house is locked up. Do you need your laptop?”
“Yes, let me go get it.”
He brushed a kiss onto her head. “I’ll get it. Wait in here.” Within a couple of minutes he was back with laptop and charger. He took their bags and led her to his truck before driving them into Kansas City to Hell’s Place.
“You might want to bring your laptop because I’ve got a lot of paperwork to catch up on,” he informed her as he helped her out of his old truck.
“Yes, sir,” she replied smartly as she clutched her things to her chest. As they went inside, she looked
