still needed to see what he wanted. I picked up the phone and read the messages.

She’s crazy, the message began, and then it explained how Sally went off on him for just being friends to me. After that, there were a few messages that asked if I got the text. That was hours ago. Sighing, I replied.

“Sorry. Was swamped with homework. That sucks, though. Do you want to talk about it some more?”

With my reply so late in the game, I didn’t expect a message back. However, less than a minute later, I got a message. “Sure,” it said. “Do you want to meet somewhere and talk about it?”

Did I ever? With that said, I needed to finish my homework, and besides that, I didn’t even feel safe going outside after what Sally did. “Care to meet me in my dorm?”

    “Yes.”

I was shocked at how fast he replied. I expected him to ignore my request, but instead, he responded right away. I gave him the directions to my dorm, thinking that maybe he wouldn’t come. Of course, he had proven to me that he actually does care about as a friend, at the very least, but still. After getting screwed over so many times, your confidence does tend to go down, even if you’re proven wrong numerous times.

I waited for about thirty minutes. During that time, Julie left to go on a ‘hot date,’ making the wait a little lonely. I was a bit annoyed at how she was crying and swearing off men a few hours ago, and was now dating a man just a couple hours later. It was like jumping off a sinking ship and landing on another doomed boat. I really didn’t understand some of my female friends.

There was a knock on the door, bringing me out of my ranting state. I went to the doo and answered it right away. It was Evan!

“Looks like you came,” I said.

    “Why wouldn’t I?” Evan replied.

I shrugged. “I’m just a bit surprised.” I explained to him how I was set up so many times in high school.

“Understandable. I just got to get away from that crazy bitch.”

    “Who, Sally?”

He nodded. “She was screaming at me for hanging out with you, even though I explained there was nothing wrong. She acted all polyamorous and shit, but as soon as I even talked to another woman as just friends, she acted like I broke some rule. Bitches be crazy.”

I scoffed. “What?” he asked. “You’re not in the group of those crazy bitches.”

I shook my head. “It’s not that,” I explained. With that, I told him what Sally did after he left. His eyes widened. “She didn’t!”

“Yep,” I said. “She got a little physical with me, all because I got a sandwich with you. Why are you even dating that ho?”

“At first, it was because I liked the sex, but now, I feel like I’m fearing for my life. She’s like a time bomb that I can’t figure out how to turn off.”

“Break up with her, file a restraining order, call the cops if she gets close,” I said. “That’s what my mamma did after she broke up with my crazy stepdad.”

“That sounds easier than it looks,” Evan explained. “Everyone will notice, and there will be a whole circus over it. You know how my privacy is.”

“You know controversy, though,” I explained. “People forget about that shit within a week or two.”

He nodded. “I don’t disagree with that, but I still don’t want to risk my career. I just don’t know what to do.”

He walked closer. “By the way, thanks for being there with me. My friends would have laughed at me, and any other girl would have been all up on my bones instead of giving me a chance to speak my mind. You’re one of the few good ones.”

I smiled. “That’s what I strive to be.”

We looked at each other for a good while. Underneath that tough, player demeanor, I saw a man who was quite nice, and emotional, once you got to know him. His eyes looked expressive and wide as he looked into mine. Before I knew what I was doing, I
