I raised an eyebrow. “Why is that bad?” I asked.

“She was supposed to be a one-night stand, just like all the other women. But she thinks she’s my girlfriend, and it’s really annoying. I mean, the sex is great, don’t get me wrong…”

Fire blazed in my eyes, and I had to simmer down. Where did that come from? This is a guy who did get laid a lot, so why should I be salty about it?

“…but she’s way too clingy. She says I can go after other girls, but I’m almost afraid to. I should have learned not to mess with those crazy church girls, but hey, I can never resist.”

That made me glad my mamma was never too much of a church woman. She went to church every weekend out of obligation, but her lifestyle was anything but Christlike. As for myself, I was at that stage where I really didn’t know what to believe.

I listened to his grievances and offered him advice. “Maybe you should end it,” I said. And I made an inner eye roll as I said the next thing. “I mean, you’ve ended it with so many women before.”

He nodded. “True, true. But I’m still afraid. She looks like the girl who would pull a knife out on you. I’ve dealt with some clingy bitches before, but she gives me worse vibes than any of my ‘exes.’”

“Anything else on your mind?” I said.

“Still annoyed how my father won’t acknowledge me. Besides that, nothing else. What about you?”

My eyes wandered to my phone, where I saw that I got a new message on the dating app. It was spam, predictably. Getting my hopes up once again. “Not much. School is going okay. I just wish that I had a date, you know? I was never the best looking girl in high school, but I expected college would have a more open field. But not even the guys on my level will date me.”

Evan scoffed. “In a way, I envy ya. Sex gets old after a while, and I do wish people would leave me alone when I want it. But fame isn’t some switch you can flick off when you’re done with it, now is it?”

“I guess the grass is really greener on the other side,” I said.

“Yep. Those dumb phrases we heard as children are a lot more meaningful as adults, aren’t they?”

We finished the food, Evan tipped the blushing waitress, and then we walked outside. As we did, Evan looked at me, and I saw nervousness in his eyes. That was interesting. Why is an alpha male football player nervous?

    “Listen, I…”

As he said this, we heard stomping approaching us. We turned around, and Sally was standing in front of us.

“What are you two doing?” she asked. Her tone of voice tried its damndest to sound casual, but I could tell there was aggression underneath those words.

    “Just hanging, why?” Evan asked.

“And you didn’t bring me along?” she put her hands on her hips.

“You weren’t answering your texts,” he said.

“Just head to your dorm, and I’ll meet you there,” she said.

    “Right.”

With that, Evan walked away, but not before saying bye to me. Sally looked like she was going to walk away as well, but then she turned around once Evan was out of view. She turned to me, and it was like I was staring at a different person.

She walked up to me, gritting those pearly whites, and put her fake nails around my neck as if she were about to kill. “Listen, bitch. I don’t know what you’re doing, but stay away from Evan. He would never touch the likes of you!”

In these cases, I usually ran away or begged with my attacker, but the words that came out of my mouth were almost out of instinct. “Then why are you worrying?”

As I said this, she backed away and raised her hand as if to slap me. But before she did, she walked away, running like a coward.

“The hell is your problem?” I said to myself. Evan wasn’t kidding around. This bitch was cray-cray! Evan should drop her right now, but there was an ache in my chest, as if to
