already felt like an eternity.
âThank you again for your time, Mrs. Gallagher.â
âYouâre welcome, Detective,â she said. âIâm sorry I wasnât able to be of more help.â
âLike your husband said, itâs only been a few days. But if you should remember something, anything at all about what happened that night, Iâd appreciate it if you would get in touch with me.â
âIâll do that,â she assured him, and took the business card he offered.
He inclined his head toward Matt. âMr. Gallagher.â
âDetective.â Matt shook the other manâs hand, then ushered him toward the door. âIâd like you to keep me informed of any progress you make.â
âOf course.â Detective Delvecchio started to leave, then paused. He rubbed at his jaw, and Claire could havesworn she saw speculation in the manâs hazel eyes as he looked from Matt to her and back again.
âWas there something else, Detective?â Matt asked.
âI understand your wife is going to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow.â
âThatâs right,â Matt replied. âThe neurologist recommended she stay an additional night for observation, but she should be released sometime tomorrow. Why?â
âIâm probably just being overcautious, but it might be a good idea if she isnât left alone at home until we catch this guy.â
âShe wonât be. Iâll be with her. And when Iâm not, my housekeeper or someone in my family will be staying with her.â
âIs that really necessary?â Claire asked.
âItâs just a precaution, maâam. But I think itâs better if you have someone with you until we find this guy and put him behind bars.â
Alarms went off in Claireâs head. âWhy?â she asked, an uneasy feeling skittering down her spine.
âLike I said, itâs just a precaution,â Delvecchio told her.
Claire narrowed her eyes, stared at the burly police detective. âI wouldnât think that sort of precaution is necessary in a mugging case. Is there something you havenât told me, Detective?â
âRed, you heard the man. Itâs just a precaution.â
Ignoring Matt, she pressed on. âDetective?â
âCall it the gut feeling of an old cop. I just think it would be a good idea if youâre not left alone.â
âShe wonât be,â Matt said, and started to usher the detective out of the room.
âDetective, wait. Do you think heâs going to come after me again?â
He hesitated. âHe shouldnât. From all indications you were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, the victim of a random mugging.â
âIs that what you think it is? A random mugging?â
âWhat he thinks doesnât matter,â Matt insisted. âNo oneâs going to hurt you again.â
Dismissing the angry look Matt shot the detective, Claire persisted. âDetective Delvecchio, Iâm asking for your professional opinionâthat gut feeling you mentioned. Do you think the attack on me wasnât random and that he might come after me again?â
âRight now I have no reason to believe it was anything more than what it appears to be and this feeling in my gut is just indigestion. If thatâs the case, the guy is probably long gone and wonât bother you again,â he informed her.
âBut?â Claire prompted.
âBut on the off chance that Iâm wrong, and my gut is right, this wasnât a random mugging, Iâd rather err on the side of caution and make sure that youâre protected.â
Claire could feel the color drain from her cheeks. She fisted her fingers in the sheets. A shudder ran through her as she thought of those cold eyes in the police sketch. âBut you said he stole my wallet. What makes you think his goal was more than robbery?â
âDelvecchio,
