Leslie said sarcastically. âLike you donât know.â
âI donât!â Tania cried. âI donât have any idea what youâre talking about!â
âHa.â Leslie bared her teeth in a vicious smile. âFirst you get to be Homecoming Queen. Now you steal the role in Keithâs video. You knew I was counting on that role for my college portfolio! I canât believe you stole that from me, too!â
âBut â¦â
âI could
kill
you, Tania!â Leslie clenched her fists. âI really could!â
Eva shuddered. Leslie is totally out of control, she realized.
âYou donât care about acting,â Leslie accused, glaring at Tania. âBut Iâve wanted to act since I was a little girl. And you know it! You know it and you still took the part from me!â
âStop it, Leslie!â Tania shouted. âJust stop a second and listen to me!â
âWhy should I?â
âBecause I didnât even know you wanted to be in the video,â Tania explained.
Leslie tossed her head, looking skeptical.
âI
didnât
know,â Tania repeated slowly. âKeith never told me. Leslie, I donât blame you for being upset. If Keith had said something, I would have told him to use you. But he didnât!â
Leslie stared at her a moment. Then her shoulders sagged, and the fury went out of her eyes.
Eva sighed in relief.
âIâm really sorry,â Tania murmured.
Leslie nodded. âWell â¦â She paused. âI have something to tell
you,
Tania.â
âYou do?â
âAfter all, why shouldnât I ruin your day, too?â Leslie said bitterly.
âHuh?â Tania frowned. âWhat do you mean?â
Evaâs heart sped up. Leslie is going to tell her about Sandy and Cherise, she realized. I canât let
Leslie
do it! Sheâll enjoy it too much. And Tania will be really embarrassedâin front of her biggest rival!
âWhat is it?â Tania asked Leslie.
âNot now!â Eva cried. âLeslie, come here.â
She grabbed hold of Leslieâs arm and pulled her into the wings.
âWhat is your problem?â Leslie demanded, annoyed.
âI know what you were about to say!â Eva whispered furiously. She squeezed Leslieâs arm. âDonât you
dare
tell her about Sandy! I know youâd just love to hurt her. But donât you dare!â
âStop it!â Leslie hissed, jerking her arm away.
âYou
stop it!â Eva insisted. âKeep your mouth shut about Sandy and Cherise!â
Leslie glared at her for a moment. Eva stood her ground. âFine. I wonât tell her ⦠now,â Leslie finally answered.
She spun around and stalked off.
âWhat was that all about?â Tania asked. âWhat did she want to tell me?â
Eva took a deep breath.
But as she started to speak, the stage doors clanged open and the rest of the Homecoming Court trooped in.
I canât tell her now, Eva thought. Not with people around. âNothing,â she said, forcing a smile. âForget it. It wasnât important.â
The next afternoon, Eva stood by the big fountain in the Division Street Mall and gazed around. She and Tania had made plans to meet here to shop for Homecoming dresses again. But so far, she hadnât spotted her friend.
Of course, itâs Saturday, she reminded herself. The place is packed. Taniaâs probably stuck in the crowd, trying to find me.
Eva craned her neck, but it was impossible to see over the heads of all the shoppers. Frustrated, she climbed up on the low stone wall surrounding the fountain to get a better look.
As she peered around, she spotted a tall guy with curly, reddish-brown hair and a scattering of freckles across his cheeks.
âJeremy!â Eva stood on tiptoe and waved her arms. âJeremy!â
Jeremy turned, startled. When he saw Eva, a shy smile spread across his face, and
