perfect except for that plane.â
âI know, but â¦â
âBesides, I donât have forever to do this video,â Keith pleaded. âItâs October. Weâve been lucky so far, but the weather could change any day.â
âHey, give her a break,â Sandy told him. âShe canât stay. Itâs not her fault.â
Tania laughed. âActually, it is. If only I hadnât fainted.â
As Keith ran a hand through his hair in frustration, Tania grabbed it and gave it a squeeze. âIâm sorry, Keith. I promise not to faint next time.â
Blushing, Keith gave her a lopsided grin.
Jeremyâs right, Eva realized. Keith has a major crush on Tania.
Tania gave Keithâs hand another squeeze, then turned to Sandy and kissed him quickly on the cheek. âSee you later.â
As Tania ran down the hill toward the school, Eva grabbed her book bag and followed.
Nowâs my chance to tell her about Sandy, she thought to herself. Iâll just tell her and get it over with. It wonât be fun, but at least sheâll know the truth about him.
I just hope she wonât be mad at
me
for telling her, Eva thought.
Picking up her pace, she caught up to Tania as she was about to enter one of the side doors of the auditorium.
âHey, Tania. Can I talk to you a minute?â
âSureâ Tania shoved open the door and they stepped inside. âWhat is it?â
âI â¦â
âWhoa, itâs pitch black in this place,â Tania interrupted as the heavy door clanged shut behind them. âI guess Iâm the first one here. Whereâs a light switch?â
âIâm not sure.â
Eva blinked, waiting for her eyes to adjust. They stood in one of the side aisles, next to the back row of seats. âI guess we could turn the stage lights on. But why donât we sit down and talk?â she suggested, pointing to the seats.
âSure, but letâs get some light in here.â Tania began walking down the carpeted aisle toward the stage. âWhat do you want to talk about?â
Eva frowned, trying to decide how to start. Should I just blurt it out?
Guess what? Sandyâs fooling around with Cherise.
âEva?â Taniaâs voice came from farther down the aisle. âWhat is it?â
âWell â¦â Eva slowly started toward the stage. This was harder than she thought.
âIs everything okay?â Tania asked. Her sneakers squeaked as she began climbing the wooden steps leading up to the stage. âYou seem awfully worried about something.â
âI am, sort of,â Eva admitted.
Eva climbed up behind Tania onto the darkened stage. Just tell her and get it over with, she thought.
She took a deep breath.
But before she could say anything, a shadow caught her eye.
A moving shadow.
Eva gasped as a figure rushed from the darkness.
âIâm going to kill you, Tania!â a voice cried. âIâm going to kill you!â
chapter 9
Â
T ania screamed and jumped away.
She collided with Eva. The two of them staggered backward, then crashed to the floor of the stage.
In a panic, Eva rolled out from under Tania, then scrambled to her feet. As she reached down to pull Tania up, the stage lights burst on.
Eva gasped and shaded her eyes, blinded by the bright overhead spotlights.
âYou get everything you wantâdonât you, Tania?â a voice demanded angrily.
Eva lowered her hand, blinking in the light.
Leslie stood a couple of feet away, glaring furiously at Tania.
âLeslie?â Taniaâs voice shook. âWhat ⦠whatâs â¦â
âYeah, whatâs going on?â Eva cried. âYou scared us to death! Whatâs the matter with you, anyway?â
âJust stay out of it, Eva,â Leslie snapped. âThis is between me and Tania.â
âWhat is?â Tania asked. âLeslie, what did I do?â
âOh, sure,â
