gladiator guy. The story of Hercules is a
myth
. That means he never really lived.â
They left the woods and started up their street.
âI know itâs a myth,â said Annie. âBut I have a simple explanation.â
âWhat?â said Jack.
âHercules is a myth to people in
this
time,â said Annie. âBut in Roman times, lots of people believed he was real. So, since we were in Roman times, he was real to us.â
âI donât know â¦Â â said Jack.
âDid you ever hear the saying?â said Annie. â
When in Rome, do as the Romans do
.â
Jack laughed. âYeah.â He looked up at the sky. âThanks, Hercules,â he said softly, âwhatever you are.â
âJack! Annie!â their dad called from their front porch. âTime to go!â
âOh, brother, I forgot,â said Jack.
âYeah, I hope nothing exciting happens on
our
vacation,â said Annie.
âYeah,â said Jack. âI hope itâs really,
really
boring.â
âHurry!â their dad said.
âComing!â they called.
Then they took off running for homeâand a restful vacation.
More Facts for You and Jack
1) Pompeii was forgotten after it was buried in ash and pumice. In 1594, the ruined city was discovered by workmen who were digging a tunnel. Many things from everyday life have been uncovered in both Pompeii and Herculaneum. Recently, a library of scrolls was found.

livre
. In English we have the word âlibrary.â

Anno Domini

Annie peeked into Jackâs room.
âReady to go to China?â she asked.
Jack took a deep breath.
âSure,â he answered.
âBring your secret library card,â Annie said. âI have mine in my pocket.â
âYep,â said Jack.
He opened his top dresser drawer and took out a thin wooden card. The letters M L on it shimmered in the light. Jack dropped the card into his backpack. Then he threw in his notebook and a pencil.
âLetâs go,â said Annie.
Jack pulled on his pack and followed her.
What are we in for today?
he wondered.
âBye, Mom!â said Annie as they passed their mom in the kitchen.
âWhere are you going?â she asked.
âChina!â said Annie.
âGreat,â said their mom. She winked at them. âHave fun.â
Fun?
thought Jack. He was afraid that
