everyone’s
attention. A police car sped toward the brawling group. Either they
were called, or they saw the fight from the road. I didn’t see why
werewolves would call the police, considering the police were
human, well I assumed they were anyway. The group had quit
brawling. Some of them fled into the woods, others stayed
put.
“ Just keep your mouths
shut. I will handle this,” Dawson ordered as he looked at the
others in the group. I was surprised that Jason remained quiet. It
was obvious the werewolves did not like the police
presence.
There were two officers in the car.
They stepped out of the car with their guns pointed at the group.
“All of you on the ground,” the first officer ordered.
Dawson raised his hands in surrender,
but didn’t comply. “It was a little misunderstanding officers.
There is no need for this,” he said trying to be as polite as
possible. I could hear the slight annoyance in his voice suggesting
he didn’t like the police.
“ On the ground!” the other
officer ordered. I could tell they were on edge for some reason.
Maybe the bar wasn’t a fun place for them to go. It was obvious
they were human, and not werewolf. They would have been more
confident, and less fearful.
I really didn’t want to go to jail,
and I didn’t want anyone getting shot; so I decided to see if I
could get them to go away. “Officers,” I said moving forward in the
crowd.
The two officers immediately turned
their attention to me. They had their guns aimed at my chest. I
really didn’t like guns. I saw what humans did to one another with
guns. I knew they were necessary for officers, but I didn’t like
them being aimed at me. “Please put your weapons away,” I said
softly as I stepped up next to Dawson. The familiar blank look and
slight confusion came over their faces as they holstered their
guns. I was relieved my power was going to work on them. The fact
that I couldn’t use my power on Mason had shaken me. I wasn’t
nearly as confident in by abilities as I had been before. All I
needed was to run into some other supernatural being that I had no
defenses against. “Thank you,” I said echoing my relief. “You
didn’t see a fight, it was a little misunderstanding. You are going
to get back in your car and leave. Forget you were ever even here,”
I said firmly. Normally I tried to be politer, but I just wanted
the whole thing to be over because that meant I could leave sooner,
rather than later.
They looked at one another, then back
at me. After a second they both turned and walked back to their
car. They weren’t going to put up a fight. I knew they wouldn’t.
Once I had them in a trance they would do whatever I
asked.
No one spoke until the police car was
safely back on the road headed away from the bar, and all we could
see were taillights.
“ What the hell was that?”
Dawson asked as he watched me. He sounded like he was both curious
and concerned.
“ Nothing, I need to go,” I
said quickly as I turned to walk back to the car. I was ready to
get back to my life. The amount of people standing around was
unnerving. I was used to being unseen, not having a bunch of people
observing what I could do.
“ We have unfinished
business,” Jason cut in as he stepped between me and the
car.
I sighed. “I just kept all of you out
if jail, doesn’t that count?” I asked annoyed.
He scoffed. “We never would have gone
to jail, believe me.”
“ She isn’t going with
you,” Dawson cut in as he moved in front of me. He was almost nose
to nose with Jason.
I didn’t really understand why he was
defending me; then again he was probably defending his territory
not me. I wished more than anything I could control them. I was
tired of all the over confident bravado. I didn’t see how any of
them got anything done.
“ I disagree,” Jason
countered as he stood his ground.
Several other wolves gathered behind
Dawson in a show of force. There had to be at least ten of Dawson’s
men
