stared at Hannah curiously.
âCan I room with you guys?â Hannah asked, reaching back to adjust her long braid behind her shoulders.
âHuh?â Corky cried in surprise.
âThereâs no room for me with Ronnie and Heather,â Hannah declared. âThey both filled up the dressers before I could start to unpack. And look at all the stuff I brought.â She gestured to the two bulging suitcases.
âYour room is bigger,â Hannah continued, gazing around. âThereâs nowhere for me to put my stuff in the other room.â
âBut, Hannahââ Kimmy started to object.
âAnd get this,â Hannah said, ignoring Kimmy. âRonnie took the top bunk even though I told her I canât sleep on the bottom. I mean, it just creeps me out to have someone sleeping above me. You know? But she was so stubbornâshe refused to move down.â
âWhat about the other bed?â Kimmy suggested. âThereâs a third bed, right?â
âYeah. Sure,â Hannah replied heatedly. âBut Heather claimed it. She says she has to be by the window or else she canât breathe.â
âI can understand that,â Debra said, glancing at the bed she had staked out by the window.
âSo can I room with you guys?â Hannah asked.
âBut there are only three beds,â Corky protested.
âYeah. These rooms are designed for three,â Kimmy added, gesturing around. âThree desks, three dressers, three beds.â
Hannah sighed again and rolled her eyes unhappily, her face drooping into a pout. âWell, would one of you trade with me?â she asked reluctantly.
âIâm all unpacked,â Kimmy protested. She clicked her empty suitcase shut.
âCome on,â Hannah urged in a tiny voice. âSomebody trade places with me. Youâve
got
to. Iâm just too claustrophobic in the other room. Iâll freak. Iâll totally freak. Really.â
She glanced from Debra to Corky, then back to Debra.
âWellâ¦okay,â Debra finally relented. âIf it means that much to you, Hannahââ
âYes, it does! Thanks, Debra!â Hannah cried. And to Debraâs surprise, Hannah rushed over, threw her arms around Debra, and hugged her. âYouâre a real pal!â she squealed.
âNo big deal,â Debra said, casting an uncomfortable glance at Corky. She started to collect her things.
Hannah dragged her suitcases over to Debraâs bed by the window.
âHey, weâre going to be late,â Kimmy cried, glancing at her watch. âWeâre supposed to be in the gym at two oâclock.â
âSee you down there,â Debra called. The door slammed behind her.
âWhereâs the gym?â Hannah asked, opening one of her suitcases and starting to unpack.
âItâs that big gray building with the dome. Remember? We passed it on our way here,â Corky told her.
âIâll never get unpacked in time,â Hannah said. She turned to Kimmy. âWhich dresser is mine?â
Kimmy pointed. âYouâve got to hurry. We get points taken off for being late.â
âEven for practice? That isnât fair,â Hannah protested. âDo we have to be in our uniforms?â
âNot for practice,â Kimmy said. âOnly at night for the competitions.â
âWeâre going to win every night!â Hannah declared. âI just know it.â
âThatâs the spirit,â Corky said dryly.
âCorky, would you do me a big favor?â Hannah asked, unfolding a pair of jeans from the suitcase, the third pair sheâd pulled out.
Why did she bring so many jeans? Corky wondered. Why did she bring two suitcases for a one-week stay?
âSure. What?â she asked Hannah.
âWould you run me a hot bath?â
The request caught Corky by surprise. âWhat did you say?â
âWould you run a tub for me? I feel so
