rope.â
âWill they stop working right on the border?â Cole asked. âWonât they work a little while weâre still close to Sambria?â
âThey would work a little in Junction, between the kingdoms,â Mira said. âOnce you cross into another kingdom, everything is different. The boundaries have existed since anyone can remember. In populated areas the border is usually marked. But marked or not, the effect is the sameâthe way shaping works changes. I guess thereâs a small chance some of our renderings might work a little in the other kingdom, but theyâll work just as well a hundred miles into Elloweer as they will right after stepping out of Sambria.â
âMy ring, for example,â Twitch said. âIt reverts me to my Ellowine form even when Iâm in another kingdom.â
âBut items like Twitchâs ring are rare,â Mira said.
âHere comes Jace,â Twitch said. âHe made pretty good time. We never stopped until just now.â
Cole saw Jace propelling himself down the road, his golden rope coiling and uncoiling like a spring, first thrusting him forward, then cushioning his landing. The result had him moving almost as fast as they could with their Jumping Swords.
Twitch gave a whistle, and Jace came to a halt the next time his rope absorbed his landing. âWhere are you?â Jace called in a hushed voice.
Twitch sprang over the bush toward the road. Cole helped Mira to her feet. They tromped to the road instead of jumping.
âHowâd it go?â Cole asked.
âMiraâs sidekick is well off the road,â Jace said. âDidnât take too long. No sign of pursuit yet. Should we keep going?â
âYes,â Mira said.
âAre you sure you donât need a longer break?â Cole asked.
âI could use one,â Mira admitted. âBut we canât afford it. If word is out about our location, we canât let our enemies catch up to us. We need to get to Carthage and find a place to hide out.â
Mango fluttered down. âFound Jace. Didnât take long.â
âScout ahead and behind,â Mira said. âLet us know if danger approaches. After we get to Carthage, weâll cross into Elloweer. As a semblance, you canât go there, so find Joe and tell him where we went. Once Joe catches up to us, go back to Liam and let him know what weâre doing. Then serve him until I return to Sambria.â
The cockatiel dipped her head. âAs you desire.â She took flight, climbing swiftly.
Cole shook his head, realizing he barely even reacted now to a magically created talking bird helping out the group. It was amazing how quickly the totally bizarre could become normal when it was part of your everyday life.
âIâve never been to Carthage,â Jace said. âI hear itâs quite a city.â
âNot many cities span two kingdoms,â Mira said. âAdd that itâs on a river, and you have a major trade center.â
âAnd we have a few ringers to spare,â Jace said with a grin. âI brought our money from the coach.â
âWeâre not on holiday,â Mira scolded.
âPlenty of people in cities have money,â Jace said. âWeâll draw less attention if we donât look like weâre hiding.â
âKids spending a lot of money always draws attention,â Mira said, âas curiosities and as targets.â
âShe has a point,â Cole said. That was as true back home in Arizona as it was here.
âSo do I,â Jace replied harshly. âIâve spent my life as a slave. I donât want to keep living like one longer than necessary. Iâm free, and I have money. I donât think we should start tossing around gold ringers, but plenty of free kids our age have some money on them. Enough to buy some food and have a little fun.â
âNo fun,â Mira said sternly.
