job on the show this afternoon, Frank.â
âThanks, Matt,â Frank said. âYou havenât heard anything from Clarence since then, have you?â
âNot yet,â Matt said, âbut heâll turn up. Heâs just grandstanding again. Clarence likes pulling silly publicity stunts.â
âCome on, Matt,â Marcy said. âYou donât think Clarence would vanish like this just to get attention, do you?â
âWhy not?â Matt said with a shrug. âRemember that time he pretended to break his leg when he fell off the edge of the set, then took the cast off in the middle of the show a week later and danced around the studio? We got angry phone calls all day from people who had sent sympathy cards thinking he was really hurt.â
âThatâs not the same thing,â Marcy insisted.
âMaybe not,â Matt said, âbut I bet Clarence turns up safe and sound during Tuesday nightâsshow. Heâll probably pop out from backstage and announce, âYour old buddy Clarence is back!âââ
âIf he does,â Marcy said, âTed Whalenâll fire him so fast his head will spin.â
âThatâs a pleasant thought,â Matt said, a gleam in his eye.
âYou sound like youâd be happy if Clarence got fired,â Frank said.
âNot me. I love the guy,â Matt replied. Frank could tell that Matt was being sarcastic. âAnd I certainly wouldnât want anything to happen to the host of Bayportâs longest-running TV show,â Matt went on. âWhy, heâs an institution in this town.â
âThatâs right,â Marcy said.
âListen, you guys,â Matt said, âIâve got to get moving. Got a hot date at the dry cleanerâs to get my jacket pressed.â
âSorry about the damage to your suit, Mr. Freeman,â Debbie said.
âNo problem,â Matt said. âI get a special discount at the cleanerâs. Theyâre great at taking out coffee stains, and I doubt that this will give them much trouble.â
âIâm leaving, too,â Steve said, after Freeman had left. âGot to find more clues to Clarenceâs whereabouts.â
âYou donât think Matt Freemanâs right about Clarence pulling a publicity stunt?â Debbie asked, following Steve to the door.
âI donât know.â Steve shrugged. âEven if he is, thereâs still a mystery to solve, right? If I can findClarence before he pops out from behind the curtain Tuesday night, it still proves what a great detective I am.â
âTrue. But thatâs not going to happen. Iâll be the one to find him first,â Debbie said as the door shut behind her.
Frank and Joe stared after them in exasperation.
âWhereâd you find that pair?â Marcy asked with a frown.
âThey found us,â Frank said. âNow we canât get rid of them.â
âWerenât you going to introduce us to the new station manager?â Joe reminded Marcy.
âOh, right,â Marcy said. âCome on. His office is upstairs.â
Marcy led the Hardys out of the studio and up a flight of stairs to a luxurious suite of offices on the second floor. Frank looked around at the expensively framed paintings that hung on the wall, and the thick pile carpeting that lined the hallway.
âSomebodyâs been redecorating,â he commented to Marcy. âThese offices didnât look this nice the last time Joe and I were here.â
âMediagenicâs pumping a lot of money into the station,â Marcy explained. âThey have big plans. They want to turn it into a showcase.â
When they arrived at Ted Whalenâs office, the door was open. Whalen held up a finger to tell Marcy heâd be with her in a moment.
Frank was impressed with the size of the office. It was at least fifty feet deep and just as wide, withsleek, ultra-modern
