Boy, am I glad I found it.â
âGive that back to me,â Debbie demanded. âI found that piece of evidence.â
Frank grabbed the jacket away from Steve. âThis case will get solved a lot faster if we share the evidence. For all we know, Clarence Kellermanâs life may be at stake. Itâs irresponsible to risk his life just for the sake of proving which of us is the better detective.â
Steve looked sheepish. âYouâre right. Iâm sorry.â
Debbie started to reply angrily, then thought better of it. âI guess that makes sense. Okay, weâll share the evidence.â
âGood,â Frank said. âNow what is this thing, anyway?â
âItâs a manâs jacket,â Steve said.
âI can see that,â Frank said. âBut why is it evidence?â
âI found it next to the set of âThe Four OâClock Scholar,âââ Debbie said.
âI found it,â Steve interrupted.
âNo squabbling, remember?â Frank said, holding up his hand in warning.
âWe both found it,â Debbie said reluctantly. âAnd we think it must have been left here by Clarence Kellerman.â
âWhy do you think that?â Joe asked.
âBecause,â Steve said hesitantly, âitâs a manâs jacket and, well, Clarence is a man.â
âWhat a clever connection,â Joe said. âI never would have thought of it.â
Marcy rushed into the studio. âI heard a crash,â she said, then stopped when she saw the smashed camera. âWhat happened here?â
Frank explained, then asked the producer about the jacket.
âThat jacket belongs to Matt Freeman,â Marcy told them. âHe always keeps a spare in the studio in case something happens to the one heâs wearing. He has a habit of spilling coffee on his jacket.â
Frank looked at the wrinkled, dust-stained jacket. âIâm afraid heâll have to get this one dry-cleaned. Actually, heâs lucky he doesnât have to buy a new one,â he added with a glance at Steve and Debbie.
Marcy took the jacket from Frank. âI want to apologize for what happened with that camera,â she said. âI donât know what could have gone wrong. The camera crews are usually careful to make sure that everything is secure and in place.â
âMaybe Joeâs right,â Frank said, looking at his brother. âMaybe it wasnât an accident.â
Debbie looked stunned. âThat means somebody really might have been trying to kill us.â
âItâs possible,â Frank said. âWhoeverâs responsible for Clarenceâs disappearance may be a desperate person. I hope this makes you think twice about playing detective.â
âAre you implying that I might give up?â Debbie asked.
âLook,â Joe said. âThis isnât a detective novel. Things could get really dangerous from here on out. Kidnapping is serious business.â
âWell, I still plan to solve this case,â Debbie said firmly. âIf Clarence Kellermanâs life is in danger, then he needs my help more than ever.â
âIs that my jacket?â said a manâs voice from the doorway. âIt looks like somebody tried to iron it with their feet.â
The Hardys turned to see Matt Freeman step into the studio.
âOh, hello, Matt,â Marcy said. âSorry about the jacket. We had a little, ah, accident.â
âSo I see,â Matt said, looking at the smashed pieces of the fallen camera as he took the jacket from Marcy. âWhat happened there? Looks pretty nasty. Was my jacket underneath that when it fell?â
âNot exactly,â Marcy said, looking eager to change the subject. âYou remember the Hardys, donât you, Matt?â
âOf course,â he said, stepping forward with a smile and offering his hand for Frank and Joe to shake. âYou did a great
