revoke your visa and send you back to New York.â
âWhat?â
âOr we can arrest you.â
âHold on a second.â
âDo you have information relating to this crime?â
Gannon heard the partner say âJack Gannonâ into his phone and grew uneasy. This was not like a crime scene in Buffalo. What had he stepped into? Sweat rolled down his back. His mind blurred with the reports heâd read on the plane of how elements of the Brazilian police were feared for alleged corruption, brutality and, according to human-rights groups, executing criminal suspects.
A New York detective might have offered a few words of condolence for the loss of Gannonâs colleagues. Not this Roberto guy, who was tapping Gannonâs passport in his palm.
âYour response?â
Gannon studied the manâs ID. âYouâre Roberto Estralla?â
âYes.â
âThe lead detective?â
Estralla nodded.
âMay I have my passport back?â
âYou have failed to answer my question.â
After quick consideration, Gannon said, âWould you exchange information confidentially?â
Estralla stopped tapping Gannonâs passport. âAre you attempting to bribe me? Because that is a crime.â
âNo.â
âTell me what information you have, before I exercise my authority.â
âI believe Gabriela and Marcelo were supposed to meet a source here.â
âAnd what is the name of this source?â
âI donât know.â
âWhat sort of business did they have with this source?â
âI donât know.â
Estralla spoke to his partner in Portuguese then continued, âWhere did you learn of this information about the meeting?â
âWe heard it at WPA headquarters in New York before I was dispatched to Rio de Janeiro.â
Estralla studied Gannonâs face for an icy moment.
âIn which hotel are you staying?â
âNine Palms.â
Estralla nodded to Gannonâs cell phone.
âYour telephone number?â
Gannon recited it and the moment Estralla finished noting it, Estrallaâs cell phone rang. He returned Gannonâs passport. âYou may go,â he said, hailing a uniformed officer before taking his call.
âWait,â Gannon said, âI have some questions.â Estralla waved Gannon away to take his call but Gannon persisted. âDo you have any suspects or leads? What about a motive, or the type of bomb?â
Estralla and his partner walked away. A uniformed officer took Gannonâs arm and escorted him to the police line where he was suddenly awash in bright lights from the news cameras.
âJack Gannon,â an attractive woman wearing flawless makeup, a tailored suit and a sense of urgency beckoned him. She gripped a microphone. A man with a TV camera on his shoulder stood behind her. âYou are with the WPA?â the woman asked.
The police officer nodded and nearly two dozen journalists and photographers crowded around Gannon.
âI am Yasmin Carval from Globo.â The rings on her fingers glinted as she extended her mike to Gannon. âDid the police tell you who is responsible?â
âNo, Iâm sure you know more than me.â
âTwo of your WPA press friends were killed. Can you say something to us about that?â
The lights from the five or six TV cameras around him were intense. Gannon glimpsed Luiz at the fringe of the pack and caught a hint of Yasmin Carvalâs strong perfume as she stepped closer.
âMr. Gannon, what has been the impact?â Yasmin Carval asked.
âThe loss has taken a toll on our entire agency.â
âDo you think Gabriela and Marcelo were targets?â
âTargets?â
âWas Gabriela working on a story about drug gangs?â
âI donât know.â
âThere is speculation that narco gangs are behind the bombing.â
âI donât know anything. I
