now,â Laurie said. âWeâve got the hole.â
Misti nodded and tentatively crept down the stairs. âYeah, for now. But unless Iâm wrong, weâre going to need to fix that hole so that no one notices it, right?â
Laurie caught her breath. She didnât even want to think about what Betty Abernathy would say if she saw it. âRight.â
âAnd weâll still want to get down here, right? I mean, unless itâs horrible, with deadly fungus and bloated corpses or something.â Misti looked at Bud. âDid you see any?â
âBloated corpses?â Bud looked pale. âNope, not so far.â He was really glad he hadnât thought of bloated corpses when he was making his mental list.
Misti picked up a piece of wood that had fallen with Bud. âIâve got a hot glue gun at home. I bet we can make it look okay. Weâll just need to make sure we donât forget and step on it.â
âYeah, okay,â Laurie said. She wasnât one hundred percent sure that essentially booby trapping the floorof the shed was a great idea, but she wasnât going to argue now. Not when there were secret passageways to explore. âWhere does that go, Bud?â She pointed down the passage. âDid you go down there?â
âYeah.â Bud grinned. âIt goes to the door to the secret room.â
Laurieâs eyes gleamed. âThatâs awesome. Whatâs inside?â
Bud shrugged. âBeats me, I donât know. I didnât look.â
âYou didnât look? How could you not look? Itâs a secret room!â
âI waited for you! Good grief, try to be a good guy . . . ,â Bud muttered.
âThatâs really cool of you,â Laurie said, smacking him lightly on the arm. She meant it, too. She didnât know if she wouldâve been able to resist at least one peek inside. âThanks, Bud.â
Misti nodded. âThatâs probably where the bloated corpses are.â
âProbably.â Bud grinned. He wouldâve grinned bigger if heâd been sure Misti was joking.
âWell, weâll see soon. Come on, letâs go!â Laurie grabbed Budâs penlight and bounced down the passageway without a second glance.
Laurie was already at the door by the time Bud and Misti caught up to her. The penlight beam was bouncing up and down on the door as Laurie waited impatiently for them to catch up.
âThis is it, right?â she said, still bouncing in frustration.
Bud nodded.
âThen letâs go!â Laurie reached out and turned the doorknob.

Things to Consider Before Blindly Walking
Through a Strange Door
by Laurie Madison, rising seventh grader
       1. How to split up the loot we find. Three ways?
       2. Maybe gold items to Misti, diamonds and jewel-encrusted things to me, and other stuff to Bud.
       3. Or maybe make decisions like that after weâve seen the loot.

       1. Try not to step on the bloated corpses.

The door swung open, and Laurie, Bud, and Misti peered inside. It was kind of an anticlimax, though, since all they could really see was a tiny patch of red where the penlight was shining on something just inside the room.
âWell, this stinks,â Laurie said finally. âWhat is that red thing? Can you see anything?â She took a few steps into the room and shone the flashlight around. âIt looks like, what? Furniture or something?â
Bud followed her into the room and took a few steps past her into the blackness. âOw!â he yelped. âWhat the heck is that?â
âWhat?â Laurie pointed the flashlight in the direction of Budâs legs, but all she saw was a blur of khaki as Bud jumped back.
