let me take it back. “Think about it. You told me you slept with Wyatt and you said he didn’t use protection. That was a week ago. I knew I was pregnant three days after it happened. Your scent has changed and you haven’t stopped throwing up. I think you’re carrying his pups.”
I opened my mouth to disagree, the denial was vehement but it got stuck in my throat. No, it couldn’t be. It was known that male wolves could get pregnant but it was rare and it only happened with an alpha. Oh shit. Alpha sperm was known for its potency and due to our shorter gestation of five months we could usually tell if we were pregnant the day after it happened.
I swallowed and felt myself begin to shake.
“No, I can’t…it wasn’t supposed to happen.” That night with Wyatt had been a one-night stand. An amazing, unforgettable, no one will ever compare again in my life experience, but a one off nonetheless. I’d known it when I’d woken up curled against his back, my entire body stiff and tender but sated and replete. I’d known it when I gently detangled myself from him and slipped out of bed not wanting to wake him. When I’d hastily gotten dressed and taken one last look at him, his tanned skin dark against the snowy white, stained sheets and his face soft with sleep. I’d known when I’d left that hotel room and came back home and wouldn’t let myself shower because I didn’t want to wash his scent off me.
I’d finally stepped into the shower as dusk fell, knowing that in an hour Wyatt would visit his chosen wolf and bond with her. I’d felt my heart break as I cried hot tears beneath the spray of water.
“Maybe he knew it was a possibility,” Gabby said gently as she moved next to me and laid her cheek against my shaking shoulder. Her hand rubbed up and down my arm trying to soothe the chill of my skin. She leaned back and looked up at me. “Maybe that’s why he never bonded that night. Because he knew that you might be carrying his litter.”
I shook my head sharply and pushed off the couch. I was careful not to jostle her as I did so. This shaking, terrifying realization in me wasn’t Gabby’s fault. It was mine for drinking so much that night and taking up Wyatt’s sudden heart-attack inducing offer. But I couldn’t blame myself either. I’d wanted it for so long and it had been even more than I’d ever imagined.
I paced in front of the couch as I pushed a shaky hand through my hair and swallowed down the roiling bubbling up once again in my stomach. “It’s not what he wanted. I know— we all know —he wanted a mate fit for an alpha. He wouldn’t want an omega carrying his bloodline, his offspring.”
“Will you get rid of it then?”
I froze and felt revulsion flood through me. “No! No, I would never—!” I stopped and dragged in a deep breath trying to calm the shaking. I forced my clenched hands to relax. “No, if I’m pregnant, then I want to keep them.” A smile broke out over my face, as I suddenly fully comprehended what was happening. Happiness and love, so deeply felt that it immediately took root, sprung up, engulfing me in warmth. “I want my pups.”
Gabby beamed and pushed off the couch to give me a fierce hug. “I’ll go to the pharmacy and pick up a pregnancy kit—though they’re going to think it’s weird because it’s more than obvious I’m pregnant—and then you can do the whole pee on a stick thing. I can even make us some celebratory grilled cheese sandwiches after if you think you can keep it down. Might make mine with a side of steak.”
I laughed and hugged her as tightly as was safe with a five-month pregnant she-wolf before letting her go. “Thanks, Gabby.”
Her smile was watery as she picked up her keys and headed for the door. “You’re going to make one hell of a parent, Seth.”
