said. âYou knew that a woman had been abducted. Youâre supposed to report that sort ofââ
âNo, all I knew for sure was that her vidphone call to me was interrupted,â he cut in. âI decided to see if I could find out what had happened before I brought in the law. Less embarrassing that way, in caseââ
âYeah, I remember Jill Bernardino,â said Drexler. âShe used to be a Tekhead and she got in all sorts of trouble.â
âThatâs true, sà .â
The police lieutenant frowned at Jake. âThereâs a good chance this whole business tonight is tied in with Tek,â he suggested. âWhat do you know about it, Cardigan?â
âNot as much as Iâd like.â
âJake is just along to lend me a hand,â explained Gomez. âThis isnât official Cosmos business.â
âProbably because that boss of yours, Walt Bascom, canât figure out how to screw a fat fee out of anybody.â
Jake looked up at the misty night sky. âWho tipped you as to our activities?â
âHer husband, right after Gomez harassed him,â answered the policeman. âAt least Reinman had the sense to bring us in.â
âAnd howâd you know we were at this joint?â inquired Gomez.
âWent to Cardiganâs place first,â replied Drexler. âThat kid of yours, Cardigan, is nearly as stubborn as you when it comes toââ
âIf you hurt him, Drexler â¦â Jake started to lunge for the cop.
Gomez caught him by the arm, held him back. â Cuidado , Jake,â he advised. âIâm sure the lieutenant knows better than to try anything rough with Dan.â
âI never touched him,â said Drexler. âBut, since heâs enrolled at the SoCal Police Academy, it might be a good idea if he practiced being a little more respectful to real police officers.â
âWeâll pass that cogent advice along,â promised Gomez. âNow, por favor , what do you know about the whereabouts of Jill Bernardino?â
âNot a hell of a lot,â admitted the lieutenant. âIf youâd brought us in as soon as you knew sheâd been taken, weâd be a lot closer to finding her by now. Iâve got a forensic crew out there going over that half-assed park.â
Jake gestured at the police vans. âMaybe you ought to put some of these lads to work on the thing.â
Ignoring him, Drexler asked Gomez, âWhat did she say to you when she called for help?â
âHardly anything,â he answered with a shrug. âOnly that she thought she was being followed.â
âBy whoâTek people?â
âShe didnât have time to supply any details.â
Drexler took a step closer to Gomez. âAnd why in the hell was she there at all?â
âJillâs back writing for the vidwall, lieutenant. Iâm pretty sure she was expecting to meet somebody with background information for a script she was working on.â
âThe Hollywood Starwalk Park isnât exactly a research center,â said Lieutenant Drexler. âCâmon, Gomez, what was she doing there?â
âI donât know,â Gomez told him. âThis was the first time Iâve even so much as spoken to her in years. If you want information on her recent activities, talk to her husband.â
âShe never struck me as the type whoâd confide much in her husband,â said the policeman with a short, dry laugh. âOr wasnât that your impression when you were married to the lady?â
Jake said, âOur nearcaf is getting cold, Drexler. Shouldnât you fellows be out looking for clues?â
Making another angry sound, the cop turned away and started for his skyvan. He stopped, turned. âIâm mad now,â he told them slowly and evenly. âBut if you guys keep holding out on meâIâm going to shift into being truly
