point."
Victoria took another sip of tea and gave her
friend a serious look as she said, "Speaking of St. Barts…Do you
think you could move the wedding up a bit. I sorta have a
conflict."
    "Really, what's that?"
"I'm going to be really, really not nude-beach
worthy come late December." Off Jillian's completely lost look
Victoria continued, "I'm, uh…I've been meaning to tell you.
I'm…pregnant."
Jillian chuckled and took a sip of tea, "No,
really why can't, uh—" Victoria nodded with a straight face, and
Jillian choked on her tea. When she recovered, she looked at her in
shock.
    "You’re pregnant?"
"Yeah," she replied a little sadly.
    "When did this happen?"
Victoria performed some quick math in her head
and padded a few weeks on to clear Jim, "About nine weeks ago."
    "Wow, I can't believe…"
"I know. I don't know how it happened. I thought
I couldn't."
Jillian leaned up on the edge of her seat, "Is
it Jim's?"
"No way. I, uh, said nine weeks. I was
already pregnant when we met. I just didn’t know it."
    "So who's is it?"
Victoria took a deep breath then said, "It's
John's."
"Coach John?" Victoria nodded, and Jillian
asked, "Coach John who's now back with his wife. That Coach
John?"
Victoria widened her eyes as Jillian stared at
her a little sad, "Are you okay? Does he know?"
"No, absolutely not. He doesn't know. And you
can’t tell him."
    "Oh, I won't."
"I'm going to tell him as soon as I figure this
whole thing out. Please don't tell Brian. I'm not ready to tell
anyone yet. Can you make something up about moving the wedding
date? Tell him you just can't wait to marry him or…"
"Sure, I'll figure something out. So are you
keeping it?"
    "Definitely. I never considered…and I thought
about adoption, but I spent more than five years of my life
obsessing over getting pregnant. Now when it's the furthest thing
from my mind, it happens. If God wants me to have this baby, well
then I'm going to have it."
"Wow," Jillian said as she stared off toward the
pool. She looked back. "You seem happy. Are you happy?"
Victoria paused. "You know, I am. I really
am."
"Well then I'm happy for you."
"So about the wedding. If you don't change it,
I'll be seven months pregnant and look ridiculous standing next to
you at the wedding, and no one will want to see me naked on the
beach so…"
"Oh, I'm sure we can do something."
Victoria said, "I looked at a calendar and most
colleges get a few days off around Columbus Day. It's right in the
middle of the semester so the workload might not be too bad for Jim
and for me."
    "When is that?"
    "October tenth."
"Wow, that only gives me about eight weeks to
plan everything. But, uh, I think I can pull that off."
Victoria gave her a sorrowful look. "I hate to
ask you to change everything, but—"
"Don't you worry about it one bit. We can work
it out. It only takes one afternoon to get married. We can fly down
there on Friday, and people can fly back on Sunday if they really
need to get back. It'll be fine." A tear fell from Jillian's eye,
as she added, "I can't wait to hold a baby again and buy the little
clothes. You've got to let me babysit all the time."
    "Okay."
"I'm serious. I'll watch the baby while you're
at class or whatever."
Victoria began to lose it. "I love you."
Jillian stood and opened her arms wide; Victoria
moved into her embrace, and they both sobbed uncontrollably.
Brian walked outside and then gave them an odd
look. "What the hell is going on?"
Victoria and Jillian turned to him while wiping
their tears. Jillian said, "Oh nothing. We were just talking about
some sad movie."
He nodded, looking a little confused.
Victoria pulled herself together. "How's was
your birthday? I heard it was a little harried."
Jillian glared at her and Brian looked
completely lost. "What?" he asked.
"I mean that I heard you were stressed out by
those two hot police officers."
"Oh, yeah. I, uh, was," he said and nodded. He
gave them a baffled look, shook his head, and walked
