rolled my eyes at my fiancé.
“Hey, Oliver, this is Paisley. Paisley, this is my very drunk fiancé Oliver.”
“I’m not drunk, babe,” Oliver slurred.
“Whatever, I am going to hit the dance floor. You might want to slow down a little bit. I would like to spend some time with you when we get home. Alone.”
Paisley and I danced the night away.
“Are you okay, Skye? You seem sad.”
A tear escaped my eyes.
“Come on, girl – let’s go find a seat where we can talk. I can see that something is upsetting you.” Paisley offered.
“Oliver has been so distant lately. He rejected me earlier today and when I told him I would rather spend time with him at home he just told me he wanted to go out with his friends. His texts and calls have been rather short too over the last few weeks. And there are times where I can’t even get ahold of him. I know he’s preparing for deployment and he’s worried about that, but he has never acted like this before. I don’t know, Paisley, I feel like he is slipping away from me.”
“If you don’t mind me asking, how is your sex life?”
I thought about her question for a minute and debated if I wanted to tell her the truth.
“Well, it’s great. But it has been different. It’s less intimate. Earlier we had sex and he totally left me hanging. He always makes sure I come at least once. Ugh. Paisley, I don’t know what to do. We are getting married in a year. I don’t want to lose him.”
“Skye, I don’t want to be the bad guy, but if the sex isn’t what it usually is, there is a possibility he is seeing someone else. My husband and I went through the same thing before. I knew something was up when we only had sex once a week. We used to have sex at least once a day. I was a wreck when I found out he had been cheating. I did forgive him but our relationship has never been the same again. I am not saying he is cheating on you. Maybe his nerves are just shot because of his upcoming deployment. It would be hard on anyone. He could also be worried of losing you in the year he is gone.”
“I am not going anywhere. I love him and will stick by his side. But if he is cheating I don’t know if I could handle it. I will talk to him when he’s sober. Let’s get back to dancing. I need to forget for a while.”
“Of course, girl. Let’s go shake our sexy booties.” I laughed and followed her back to the dance floor. I was so glad to have Paisley in my life. She would always give it to me straight whether I liked it or not. I knew that I had to talk to Oliver, there was no way I could leave without having clarity. At 2:00 a.m., they announced last call and Paisley helped me drag Oliver to his car. He was beyond drunk. There was no way I was getting laid tonight.
“Do you want me to come to his house and help you get him to bed?”
“No I think I got him. Plus if I need help, his friend lives next door, I will just get him if I need to. Thank you for listening to me tonight, Paisley, you’re the best.”
“No biggie. You know I am always here for you. Call me if you need anything. Love you, chick.”
“Love you too.” I drove out of the parking lot feeling Oliver’s eyes on me.
“Did you enjoy yourself, sweetheart?”
“I did besides that my fiancé was too busy getting drunk and decided to ignore me most of the night.”
“You were dancing with Paisley. I wanted to give you some time with her.”
“I want to spend time with YOU, Oliver. You will be gone for a year, and you know you won’t be able to talk to me all the time. I came out here to have some alone time with you. I haven’t seen you in four months for Christ’s sake. I don’t think it’s too much to ask that you ditch your friends for one weekend! One weekend, that’s all I am asking for.”
“Why do you have to be such a bitch about it?”
“Really? I am a bitch? You know what? Fuck you, Oliver. I am done talking to you till you sober up. Get your ass upstairs and sleep it off.
