decided to let Inge go to a Halloween party she was invited to and have an adventure of our own.â
âGabe, I need to talk to my daughter.â
âWhen youâre angry, all the music goes from your voice, Robin. Mummyâs a little upset, Kali. You can say hi to her, but remember we canât tell her where we are. Thatâs a secret.â
âHi, Mummy,â Kali says. She is at the center of this drama, but her voice is bubbly and unconcerned. âGabe bought me a new game of Candy Land. We played it up at the lake, âmember?â
Robinâs tone is urgent.
âListen to me, Kali. You have to get away from Gabe. Start screaming and run.â
Thereâs a bell-like sound in the background on Gabeâs end of the line. I raise a finger and mouth the word listen to Robin. She furrows her brow in concentration but shakes her head. She canât identify what weâre hearing.
Gabe comes back on the line.
â My turn to talk, Kali,â he says. âMummy doesnât understand that weâre playing two games tonight. You and I are playing Candy Land, and all of us are playing hide and seek. Mummy is It. Itâs not fair for the person whoâs It to tell us to scream and run, because as soon as she finds us, the game is over.â
Robinâs composure shatters.
âGabe, pleaseâ¦â
â Your voice is full of music again,â Gabe says. âIâve never been able to resist your music. Kali wants us to sing a song for you. I want to do that too. We want you to remember how much we loved you.â
Suddenly I know this isnât a game. This is for real.
âGabe, youâre not going toââ
He cuts me off. âKali, letâs sing for Mummy.â
Gabeâs voice is a pleasant tenor, and Kaliâs little girl voice is fresh and tuneful. They sing a duet: âYou Are My Sunshine.â By the time they finish, Nova is in tears, and my throat is thick. Robin is frantic.
âKali, listen to me,â she says. âThis isnât a game. Gabe isnât your friend. Heâs going to hurt you. You have to get away.â
âShe canât hear you, Robin,â Gabe says. âI have the phone, and you wonât be talking to Kali anymore because you cheat. You donât play by the rules. Iâm not surprised but I am disappointed. I had hoped that perhaps since this was the last time the three of us would be togetherâ¦â
My heart is pounding. I can barely form the words.
âGabe, donât kill that little girl.â
âTrust me, Charlie,â he says gently. âItâs for the best.â
âHow can killing a six-year-old child be âfor the bestâ?â
Gabe sounds very tired . âThere are circumstancesâ¦â
I find myself shouting .
âWhat circumstances could possibly justify taking a childâs life?â
âThere arenât any.â Robinâs voice is fervent. âGabe, stop this. I want my daughter. I wonât press charges. I give you my word.â
âEven the music in your voice wonât sway me this time, my dark star. Thereâve been too many words, and I remember them allâ especially the ones at the end. You told me I âno longer meet your needs.â I wept, but your eyes, âthose silent tongues of loveâ Cervantes wrote about, were cold. You were my whole existence, Robin.â
âPeople fall out of love,â Robin says tightly.
âI didnât,â Gabe says. âWhen I promised to love you till the day I died, I meant it. In less than half an hour my birthday and my life will be over. I will die loving you, and that, my beloved, is a great gift.â
CHAPTER NINE
R obinâs body is shaking, and when she speaks, there is a quiver in her splendid voice. âStop this Gabe. I want my daughter back.â
âWhy? So that one day you can tell her that she no longer meets
