doinâ?â
âIâm good. Iâm calling with my friend April. She also goes to schoolââ
âArf.â Austin let out a quiet bark.
âAustin, be quiet,â April said, trying to muzzle him. He growled.
âDo you have a puppy?â Eve asked.
âWell, uh, that is why we are calling you.â Grace swallowed. âRemember how you told me about your grandmother? Well, April sort of turned her brother into a dog.â
âOh my!â Eve gasped. âHow did you do that? Was it your fairy godmother?â She chuckled.
Aprilâs hands started to shake. A lump grew in her throat. âWell . . . I found this spell online that I, um, tried and poo f ! It worked.â She swallowed. âSince your grandma was a witch healer we thought maybe you could help usââ
âWow.â Eve sounded amazed. âMaybe you have âthe gift.â And, I reckon you mean âwitch doctor. â â She laughed. âYeah, Iâll help yaâll out.â She had a little accent.
âThank you, Eve!â April said happily. âBut what is âthe giftâ?â
âSo, April, my grand-mère was a witch doctor,â Eve said.
âYour . . . who?â April asked, scratching her head.
âI should explain. Grand-mère is âgrandmaâ in French. Many people in my family speak French.â
âRemember, April? I told you a lot of French people live in New Orleans!â Grace said.
âI get that. Iâm not that slow. Eve just seems so . . . uh . . . normal and . . . well the witch doctors Iâve seen in moviesââ
Eve laughed. âMovies also have talking animals.â The girls laughed. Austinâs groan sounded like a laugh. The girls laughed harder.
âSo, my grand-mère has a spell book,â Eve said. âI found it one day. My mom sent me down to the gross basement. Itâs dark and  . . . ewww! Anyway, April, my grand-mère said if you can do spells, then you have a gift.â
âWHAT?â April shrugged her shoulders.
âShe said gifts can be fun and exciting, but they also bring a lot of responsibility,â Eve said. âAnd, if you are not careful, they can bring big problems. But, that the universe gives us all blessings. This may be a gift you have.â
âSo, my gift may be that I am a witch?â
twelve
âYep. You may be a witch. So you can do spells like this one,â Eve said.
âOH NO! OH NO!!! I will NEVER do anything like this again. Iâve learned my lesson,â April said, staring at Austin. âI like experiments. BUT, I kind of . . . uh . . . miss my brother. I wonât say those words EVER again. AND, Iâm scared about what Mom and Dad might do to me if they find out.â
âWell, letâs meet here tomorrow morning. Eve, can you bring your spell book?â Grace asked.
âYes maâam,â Eve said with her polite Southern accent.
Grace looked at April. âActually, letâs meet at Aprilâs house, since my brother will be here.â
âGood idea, Genius Galapagos,â April chimed in.
âOK,â said Eve, âIâll be over in the morning with the spell book.â
âArf,â Austin quietly barked.
âPerfect. I guess Austin agrees, too,â April said, sitting back down on the bed. She tucked Austin under her arm.
The girls laughed.
âOh NO!â She jumped off the bed again.
âApril, whatâs wrong?â Grace asked.
She pointed to the clock âLook! Itâs already five oâclock.â
âUh oh,â Grace said. âOh my gosh! Austin is supposed to get out of practice soon . . . in less than an hour.â
âWe donât have much time,â April said as the blood rushed to her face.
âHow are you going to get through
