I am about his death. That must have been extremely difficult, losing
your father.”
Damon nodded slowly, suddenly looking uncomfortable.
“Yes, it was. Thank you for saying so.”
I smiled softly. “What kind of man was he?”
There was a long moment of silence in which I
completely regretted saying anything at all. Maybe this was going to be more
difficult than I thought. “I'm sorry Damon, I shouldn't have brought it up.”
He waved it off. “No, it's no big deal. I guess I just
don't know how to answer that. He was just one of those...you know regular
dads. I mean not the type that would take us fishing, cause he was so busy, but still just a...regular dad.”
    “Were you guys close?”
He was silent again and then said, “I don’t really
want to talk about it.”
    “Is something wrong?”
“Dammit Cadence! I said I just don't god damn want to
talk about it. I'm serious.”
I sat there in a stunned silence. I hadn't expected
him to get angry with me and I hoped that we hadn't interrupted the other
diners. I willed myself not to look around the room I was so embarrassed.
“Look, I'm sorry. I just don't want to talk about my
father. I would rather enjoy our meal together and discuss other things such as
your position as the head accountant.”
“Of course. That’s why we’re here after all,” I said
quietly. I had actually forgotten that was the original intent of the dinner. I
had been foolish enough to think that it was closer to a date and that we could
talk about personal matters.
“Great.” He got right down to business as if he hadn't
just yelled at me a few minutes ago. I wasn't entirely sure what to think of
him, but I didn't have too many good thoughts about him going through my head
at the moment.
“When it comes to being the head accountant, Cadence,
there are certain procedures we want you to follow. While you are doing the
books, if you ever come across any money problems or issues that cause you to
run any audits of the people under you, I want you to come to me first so that
I can look things over.”
    “Sure, that's not a problem.”
“I was actually in charge of all the money before my
father died. I ran the whole department, so I know how things are done. So if
you run into any problems, I want to know about it first.”
“That's understandable.” I smiled. Our appetizers
arrived and I suddenly had no appetite. I ate anyways as to not draw any
attention to myself.
So Damon had inherited the company from his father, that much was obvious. So did that mean that he was
head of the MOB now as well? Rumor had it that his father ran the MOB before
his death so wouldn't that mean that Damon was now the leader? I couldn't be
certain but it definitely appeared to be that way.
“Why were you the head of the department? Are you an
accountant as well?”
    He smirked. “No, Cadence.”
“Oh, well how were you the head of the department
then?”
“Because I know how to control money, that's how.” He
took a bite of his food without his eyes ever leaving mine.
I found what he said interesting for a few reasons. He
was in charge of a lot of money and yet he had never been trained as an
accountant. But what was more interesting was that he admitted being able to
control money, which meant that he knew how to hide something if he wanted to.
Was that why he wanted tabs on what was going on with the money because there
was something wrong with it? What was he trying to hide? Was I being controlled
so that he could keep tabs on the money as well?
“After dinner I would like you to come back to my
place with me.”
I smiled, knowing that I would have to in the hopes
that I could bring up the issue of my parents.

    Damon

We were back at my place and Cadence was relaxing on
my couch while I got us some drinks. I decided to make some martinis to shake
things up a bit. Wine was good for its elegance but there was nothing like
vodka to loosen a lady up. And I
