âGo, Hawks!â Meg Mackintosh and her friends cheered their teammates on the soccer field.
âScore!â they yelled excitedly as the Hawks snared a goal.
âWeâre going to win the gold medal!â Alex and Carmen slapped a high five.
âMeg and Carmen, get ready,â Coach Lee called out. âYouâre going in at the end of this quarter.â
âMy brother, Peter, is the goalie for the Panthers,â Meg told Alex as she tightened her laces. âHeâs always bragging about how great he is. I wouldnât mind popping a goal past him myself,â she said with a smile.
âI wish I had the chance to,â said Alex.
âOoops, sorry, Alex,â Meg said, glancing at the cast on his broken leg. âIt must be tough sitting out the championship match.â
âAt least the Hawks are ahead,â sighed Alex, hugging his dog. âWeâve got to win this one, right, Farley?â
Carmen picked up the gold medal on thetrophy table nearby. âI saw a medal like this at a sports museum. Itâs so heavy, I bet itâs solid gold. Iâd really love to win it.â
âCoach Lee won it playing international soccer a long time ago,â Alex told her. âHe promised to give it to todayâs winning team to keep until next year.â
âThatâs great,â Meg said. âIt must be worth a fortune,â she added.
âYeah, itâs great, as long as the Hawks win,â Carmen replied.
Their words were nearly drowned out by cheering nearby.
âCome on, Panthers. Heather, get in there and fight!â yelled her dad.
âSign the soccer petition!â a woman called. âNo more awards!â
âAlex, isnât that your Mom?â asked Meg.
âYes,â Alex groaned. âShe thinks our soccer league is getting too competitive. She wants to do away with awards.â
âNo awards?â said Carmen. âHow about no yelling,â she joked. âThe parents are noisier than the kids!â
âMy parents are away,â said Meg as she scanned the area, âbut Gramps and Skip are here â at the hot dog booth, as usual.â
Just then the refereeâs whistle signaled the end of the quarter. It startled Alexâs dog, Farley, and he bolted towards the field.
Meg jumped up and caught Farley by his thick fur. He wasnât wearing a collar, so it was hard to hold on. âSorry, Farley, no dogs allowed in the game!â
Alex hobbled over to retrieve his dog. âIâve got him, Meg. Get in there and score!â
Meg gave Alex a thumbs up. âWatch my knapsack, will you? Itâs got all my detective stuff. Take a look, if you want. I know youâre curious about joining our Detective Club.â
Alex rolled his eyes at Carmen as he peered into Megâs knapsack. âShe really expects a mystery at a soccer match?â
âYou know Meg,â Carmen answered, as she followed Meg onto the field. âSheâs always looking for a case to solve.â
âLook at the stuff sheâs got in here,â Alex muttered to himself. âMagnifying glass, instant camera, notebook, binoculars, flashlight. Thereâs even a message in code.â
He picked up a pencil and started working on the code. âIf I could decode the message, Iâd really surprise Meg!â he said.
CAN YOU CRACK THE CODE?
Just then it started to sprinkle, so Alex packed up Megâs detective kit, except for her binoculars, which he used to follow the fancy footwork on the field.
The Hawks were still on the attack. Meg passed the ball to Carmen, who drove at the goal, but Peter and the Panthers turned the ball back. A moment later, the Panthers scored!
âThe Panthers will get that medal yet,â Peter called to Meg. âI can see it now â in my new display case â on my bureau,â he teased.
âNot if I can help it,â Meg
