Peter, you have a cut,â she shot him a glance. âThat could be your bloody fingerprint.â
âI did pick it up,â replied Peter. âBut I didnât take it!â
âI picked it up, too,â said Heather. âI was checking the date.â
âI looked at it, to make sure it was authentic,â admitted Heatherâs dad. âThis is so unfair that it was stolen! Now what will the Panthers get for a prize?â
âI glanced at it, tooâ said Alexâs mom nervously. âThey arenât going to fingerprint us, are they?ââ
âMom, take it easy. It sounds like just about everybody touched it,â said Alex.
âDo you think we should call the police?â Carmen asked.
âIf it isnât found by the end of the match, I may have to,â Coach Lee replied sadly.
âNow is my chance to really score,â Meg said to herself. âMaybe I can solve this mystery before they call the police!â
âParents, please. Iâm sure thereâs a very reasonable explanation,â said the referee, then she blew her whistle. âHalf timeâs over â now letâs play soccer!â
âMeg, you donât suspect my mother, do you?â asked Alex.
âNot in particular,â Meg said. âBut everyone who was around the table is a suspect,â she added. âThey all picked up the medal at one time or another.â
âCome on, Meg.â said Carmen. âYouâll have to solve this later. Weâve got to play.â
âI guess youâre right,â Meg said reluctantly. She thought for a moment, then tossed her knapsack to Alex. âOkay Alex, now
you're
the detective. If you want to join the Detective Club, help me solve the case.â
âH-h-how?â stammered Alex. âI donât know what to do!â
âDonât worry,â said Meg. âI made a chart to help you get started.â
âItâs hard to suspect friends and relatives,â Meg said. âI know â for instance, it could have been my brother. But you have to look at the evidence with an open mind.â
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE MOTIVES AND EVIDENCE FOR EACH OF THE SUSPECTS?
Alex started filling in the chart, but his attention was mostly on the field. The Hawks started to slip: they couldnât get a goal past Peter, and then the Panthers scored, tying the match 4 - 4.
At the end of the third quarter, Meg and Carmen were side-lined again.
âLetâs see what youâve got,â Meg said, reaching for Alexâs notes. âHey! You think Carmen and I are suspects?â she added.
Alex grinned. âYou said that everyone who was near the table at the end of half-time was a suspect. And everybody heard you and Peter arguing about wanting the medal.â
âFair enough,â said Meg. âThe problem is, everyone is a suspect â but we really donât have enough substantial evidence against anyone.â
She renewed Alexâs notes and added a few of her own.
Meg bit her thumbnail, then flipped to the next page in her notebook. âTime to switch tactics. If I canât figure out
who
took the medal, Iâll concentrate on
where
the thief could have hidden it.â
WHERE COULD THE MEDAL POSSIBLY BE HIDDEN?
âWhen in doubtâ¦doodleâ Meg said to herself. âIf I brainstorm long enough, a good idea might surface.â
âScore!â yelled the crowd.
âOh, no!â Alex cried.
Meg looked up. It was the Panthers scoring, not the Hawks! She tried to focus on the case.
âDid you take any instant photos?â Meg asked Alex. âMaybe looking at them will help the investigation.â
âJust a couple,â said Alex, pulling them out of his pocket.
âSome nice portraits of Farley,â Meg said with a bit of disappointment.
Sheâd hardly had a chance to look at them when Coach Lee called out, âMeg,
