asked. âWhat are you doing here so early?â
âI um ⦠I ⦠well â¦,â Bria stuttered.
âThis has to do with your test grade, doesnât it?â her teacher said, sighing. âI tried calling you at home last night, but your mom said you were at your dance class.â
âI know. Iâm sorry. But let me show you something!â Bria pleaded. She opened her laptop and the worm video started playing. Ms. Moran watched it intently. âI canât believe you did this,â she said.
âI did. I really did!â Bria said. âI do know the material, I swear! I just panicked on the test. Iâm not sure what went wrong.â
âI know what went wrong,â Ms. Moran assured her. âThere was a computer error. When I saw the F, I knew something was wrong. I went back and marked your test again by hand. I changed your grade last night. You didnât fail, Bria. You got an A minus.â
Briaâs eyes lit up. âI did? I didnât fail?â
âNo, you didnât fail. But I do think Iâll have to change your grade again.â
Oh no. Briaâs mind began to race. Her teacher hated the video. Now she really
was
going to fail her.
âPlease,â Bria said. âCan I do it again? I promise Iâll do better next time.â
Ms. Moran looked puzzled. âYou mean an A plus isnât good enough for you?â
âAn A plus?â Bria gasped. âReally?â
âAnyone who goes to this much effort to show me she understands earthworms deserves it. My favorite part was the compost goo. Do you mind if I use this for future classes?â
Bria couldnât wait to get to the studio to tell her friends the great news.
When Bria arrived a few minutes before class started, the dressing room was surprisingly missing all the Divas. So she changed into her leotard and went to look for them. There was a largenote on the studio door in Miss Toniâs handwriting: Diva Competition Team: Please meet at 111 Alton Street.
âNeed a ride?â a voice asked. It was J. J.
âWhere are we going?â Bria replied. âAnd where is everybody?â
âToni decided to take you girls on a little field trip today. The rest of the gang is there already, but Miss Toni asked me to stay behind and give you a ride when you arrived. We better hurry. Foodâs getting cold.â
âFood?â Bria asked, grabbing her bag and trailing after him to the parking lot.
J. J. nodded and opened the car door. âYup. Youâll see.â He made the lock-and-key movements over his lips again. âMiss Toni swore me to secrecy.â
J. J. and Bria pulled up in front of a large church with stained-glass windows. Bria noticed there was a long line of people out front. âWhat are they waiting for?â she said.
âTheyâre hungry,â J. J. explained. âCome on in.â
He led her through a back door of the church, down a flight of stairs, and into a large, bustling kitchen. There, wearing an apron tied around her waist, was Miss Toni.
âWelcome,â she said, noticing Bria and J. J. standing in the doorway. âWell, what are you waiting for? An invitation?â She handed themeach a tray of chicken and rice. âTake this out there and start serving.â
They both obeyed and headed into the dining room, where Scarlett, Rochelle, Gracie, and Anya were all scooping out dinners on plates for the huge crowd. Bria settled in next to Scarlett. âWhat is this place?â she asked.
âItâs a homeless shelter,â Scarlett said. âMiss Toni came here yesterday to volunteer all of us.â
âItâs really sad,â Anya whispered. âSo many of these people have no homes, no food. Look over there â¦â She pointed to a dark-haired girl about their age, sitting in the corner with her mother.
Bria smiled at her, but the girl looked the other way.
