EWWW!
â the rest of the Divas screamed in the background. Then they raced down the hill and tackled each other.
âOkay! Thatâs a wrap!â J. J. called. âNice job, girls.â
Bria was laughing so hard she could barely catch her breath. She had leaves in her hair and dirt all over her face. âThat was amazing. Thanks, everyone. Iâm going to do the edit tonight and show Ms. Moran in the morning. Cross your fingers she likes it!â
Scarlett held up her hand with her fingers crossed. Then she caught a glimpse of her watch.
âGuys, itâs six twenty! Weâre twenty minutes late for group rehearsal. Miss Toni is gonna kill us!â
They raced back inside and directly intostudio 2, where Miss Toni was already rehearsing with Liberty.
Rochelle took a deep breath and braced herself. She knew this wasnât going to be pretty.
Toni spun around and stared. For the first time since theyâd known her, the Divasâ dance coach was completely speechless.
âOMG!â Liberty gasped. âDid you guys go mud wrestling?â
Bria thought quickly. âNo, we were actually practicing out back. Um, you know, the Little Tramp and all â¦â
Scarlett picked up where she left off. âRight! We were just getting into character.â She smudged some dirt across her upper lip to look like a mustache. âSee?â
Toni still looked stunned. âRochelle, do you have anything to add to this?â she finally asked.
âUm, well, in dance and life, authenticity is everything,â she replied.
Toni raised an eyebrow. âWas J. J. perhaps involved in your authentic Little Tramp rehearsal?â
Gracie smiled. âHowâd ya know?â
Toni put down her clipboard and marched toward the door. She looked furious. âIâm going to have a few words with him. In the meantime, I expect you all to clean up yourselves, then my dance studio floor.â She pointed to the black smudges and piles of dirt theyâd scattered around.
âUh-oh,â Gracie said. âJ. J. is in trouble!â
Miss Toni still wasnât back by the time theyâd washed up, put on new leotards and tights, and returned to the studio.
âDo you think sheâs gonna fire him?â Bria whispered.
âMiss Toniâs been mad at me tons of times and she always gets over it,â Rochelle said.
Apparently, she was right. The door opened and J. J. walked inside.
âSo,â he began, âMiss Toni has asked me to take over the rehearsal for tonight.â
Scarlett raised her hand. âHow come?â
âIâm not really sure,â J. J. answered. âSomethingabout âhaving to connect more with the material.â She went off to do some research, I guess.â
âThis is all my fault,â Bria said, staring down at the floor. âI made Miss Toni mad at us.â
âYou want my advice?â J. J. asked. âI think you should just nail your routine and let Miss Toni cool down.â
Rochelle bristled. âWe took your advice before and look where it got us!â
âWe donât really have any other choice,â Anya pointed out. âThe competition is two weeks away and we donât even know the whole choreography.â
âExactly!â J. J. said, studying Toniâs notes. âSo letâs clean up those
jetés
before she comes back.â
â
Jetés?
What do you know about
jetés
?â Rochelle asked. âI thought you didnât know anything about ballet.â
âI guess Toniâs rubbing off on me,â he said with a wink. âLetâs take it from the top.â
The next day, Bria came to school an hour early to meet with her science teacher. She could hardly sleep, she was so nervous.
âBria?â Ms. Moran
