feet up underneath her. “Here goes. I’ve never been swept off my feet, ever. But he did it. In one night. He was charming, polished, classy, and amazing in bed.”
She left out the part about not being completely comfortable with him because she couldn’t explain it to herself. He did all the right things. He was the type of guy she wanted. He was driven, had goals, wore a tie to work every day. It sounded like a dumb qualification, but that was the guy she wanted. White collar. Steady, stable, financially secure.
“Sounds fantastic,” Maddie said. “Not seeing a problem at all.”
“I know. It wasn’t a problem. At all. At first. I mean I’ve never had orgasms like I did with Todd. Plus, he had the whole romantic thing down. He could give seminars. There were roses and chocolate-covered strawberries, bubble baths and long, slow lovemaking.”
Maddie sighed happily. “No. Problem. At. All.”
Morgan grinned at her sister. “We parted on excellent terms and kept in touch via e-mail and occasional phone calls. Then the next corporate meeting six months later was a repeat of the first. Romance, dancing, expensive dinners and incredible lovemaking.” She paused. “Then six months later the same.”
“Still no problem.”
“Well…” She took a deep breath. “I thought it was all great. I was excited to think there might even be a future.”
“And he’ll be in Chicago?” Maddie clarified. “What am I missing?”
“Todd has…a…power over me,” Morgan said reluctantly. “I don’t understand it.”
“A power? How? Because he’s a great lover?”
“Yes,” she admitted. “But it’s more like he’ll…use it, I guess.”
“Use it?”
“I don’t know how it happened. I don’t know if it’s because he found this spot on my neck or just the right dirty words or just the right mixture of Kahlua and cream. Or worse, it might just be him. Something about him. But all he has to do is touch me and I’ll go along with anything.”
Maddie didn’t laugh. Thank God. In fact, she set her glass down and leaned forward on the cushion. “Like he’s hypnotized you or is doing something with your mind or something? Do you think he drugs you?” she demanded.
Morgan shook her head. “It’s nothing ominous. I’m not scared of him.”
“You obviously feel like it’s a bad thing though.”
“I do because…” This was the part she didn’t want to admit. It made her sound weak. “I learned that in the aftermath of an amazing orgasm I have no inhibitions.” She said anything that was on her mind, answered any question and told every secret. It was worse than her reaction to Kahlua. “Todd figured it out too.”
Orgasms made her spill her guts.
“How?” Maddie asked quietly. “How did he figure it out?”
Morgan shrugged. “We’d start talking about work or projects and I start telling him about something I was going to be doing or trying at the hotel.”
“Then what?”
“Then in the next corporate newsletter or announcements I’d find out he did the same thing and it was wildly successful and he was getting all kinds of kudos. In fact, the last time he did something he ended up getting a bonus .”
Maddie frowned. “Why didn’t you just make sure they knew about the idea from you first?”
“It took me awhile to realize he was blatantly getting information from me. I thought maybe he didn’t mean to or something. That I just spilled things and he picked up on them. But the last time we were together we were lying in bed and he started asking me direct questions about my plans for the Christmas season. Suddenly it hit me.” She covered her face with her hands. “I’m so dumb.”
Maddie patted her knee. “Not dumb.”
“Naïve, trusting.”
“Maybe a little.”
“ Easy ,” Morgan moaned. “I barely know him but when we’re dancing or he’s talking in that sexy, husky voice on the phone, or when he’s…” She stopped and cleared her throat.
“And now
