heart. You supply the heart and weâll supply the rest. So what do you weigh? Around 225 would be my guess.â
âI was 229 on my scale when I weighed myself this morning.â
âForget your scale. Those bathroom jobs are never very accurate. Youâll get weighed every day here. Turn around.â
âWhat?â
âTurn around. I want to have a look at you.â
Slowly, feeling very self-conscious, I turned.
âThick chest, good-size arms, pecs are big, your legs look a little flabby.â
I felt uneasy, like I was a prize horse.
âHow much can you bench press?â he asked.
âI can do 210 pounds,â I said proudlyâ that was more than anybody else on the team, including the seniors who had graduated.
âOh, donât worry about that. Weâll have you pushing some real weight soon enough.â
My jaw practically dropped open. What did he mean by that?
âIf you follow your program, youâll be hoisting closer to three within twelve weeks.â
âThree? Like in three hundred pounds?â
âThatâs a minimum goal for somebody whoâs going to weigh in at 260 pounds.â
âBut I only weigh 229.â
âYou only weigh 229 now. Twelve weeks from now is a whole different game. You donât do a lot of weights, do you?â Tony asked.
âI was in here a lot last year,â I said, shaking my head. âA couple of times a week.â
âA couple of times? I thought you said a lot. Twice a week isnât going to cut it, and you probably had nobody to train you. Most likely it was a bunch of you boys in here, more pretending and playing than actually working. Weâll take care of that. You have a good platform to build on. Youâre naturally a big guy. How big is your dad?â
âHeâs big,â I said. Actually, I remembered him as being huge, but most men are pretty big compared to nine-year-olds. It had been almost eight years since Iâd seen him.
âHow much does he weigh and how tall is he?â
âA couple of inches taller than me and more weight,â I said. I wasnât sure of his exact height or weight, but I didnât like to talk about that.
âThatâs great. It means we have room for growth. Have you ever taken megadoses of vitamins or used food supplements?â
âSome chewable vitamins when I was small.â
âThat isnât quite what I was talking about. What that means is that most of the things
weâre going to try, youâve never tried. Forget the 300 pounds. We might get you up to bench pressing 325 pounds. They call you The Moose, right?â
I nodded.
âBy the time Iâm through with you, theyâll be calling you a herd of moose.â
âThat would be great.â
âAll you have to do is follow the program and work hard.â
âIâll work hard,â I said.
âI believe you. You know who you remind me of? Your attitude?â
âWho?â
âJessie McCarthy.â
âI remind you of Jessie McCarthy?â I said, shocked.
âYep. Kid always had the right attitude. I started training him when he was about your age. Helped him to become everything he is today. He still comes back to me. Heâs got all those fancy trainers and therapists and coaches up there in the NFL, but itâs still me he calls when he needs to talk.â
âThatâs incredible.â
âSo, I think itâs time we got down to work.â
âYou got it,â I said. âIâll do whatever you want, whatever it takes.â
âThatâs the attitude I like. Weâll talk about your individual program and then get you started. Thereâs no time to lose.â
Chapter Seven
âExcuse me, young man, do you have any bananas?â came a voice from behind me.
I took a deep breath before turning around. I was standing in front of a mountain of bananas, and beside me was a
