text book.”
Once again, everyone fell silent and began flipping through their books.
After class had ended, Sam, Alex and Michael walked to Mr. Kellner’s classroom. “Here you are,” Alex said to Michael. “Physics.”
“Thanks, guys. See you at lunch?” he asked before entering the classroom.
“Yeah, we’ll save you a seat.” Alex smiled and Sam laughed and shook her head.

Sam and Alex were already sitting at the lunch table when Michael walked into the cafeteria.
“Michael, over here!” Alex yelled, waving her hand.
“Do you have to scream and wave your hand like a maniac? It’s bad enough we sit at the outcast table, do we have to give them anymore reason to jeer at us?” Sam said as Michael made his way over.
    “Excuse me Miss-Wanna-Hang-With-The-Popular-Group,” Alex said.
“All right, all right, sorry I said anything.” Sam stared down at her sandwich, wishing that she could be just a little less of a freak. She really didn’t want to hang out with the popular kids, but she did want Phillip to be able to hang out with her, if he wanted to. If he did that now, he’d be committing social suicide.
“Hey, Sam, Alex.” Michael sat down with a smile.
“So how was Physics with Mr. Kellner?” Sam asked.
“You were right, he is a really good teacher,” he said.
“So do you like Birchwood Academy so far?” Sam asked.
“Yeah, it’s pretty awesome, nothing like home school.”
“I’d say so. Birchwood can be pretty hectic sometimes, pretty crowded.” Alex said.
“Well, it does include junior high as well as high school. There are a lot of people here.” Michael seemed happy about that, and Sam wondered how boring home school would be, with no one to talk to but your mom.
“Not as many as in the public schools. There are only four private high schools around here, but they only have a fraction of the students who attend public school,” Sam said.
“Oh, hey, Sam, do you know that guy who came to Pre-cal this morning?” he asked, suddenly changing the subject.
    “Does she?” Alex said.
“Shut up,” Sam mumbled to Alex.
“Well, he’s in my physics class,” Michael informed her, like she didn’t know.
“Oh, so that’s how you knew Mr. Kellner was a good teacher.” Alex smiled wickedly.
“No, Alex, it’s not like Phillip has talked to me about his classes. We were only talking yesterday in detention, nothing about Mr. Kellner or Physics. My brother was the one who told me Mr. Kellner was a good teacher. Rather, I overheard him talking with my parents,” Sam said, wanting to kill Alex because she knew her cheeks were flaming.
“Oh, sorry, Sam. I didn’t mean it like that. I was just joking.” Alex gave her a cautious smile.
“I know, I didn’t mean it to sound all bitchy Alex. I just—”
“Phillip, that’s his name,” Michael interrupted. “I came into the classroom, and he acted like he knew me. He sat next to me, and he told Mr. Kellner he’d help me get adjusted.”
“Really? Wow, that’s amazing,” Sam said, dazed.
“Well, it’s only your first day of school, and already you have three people who are helping you get situated,” Alex commented.
“Yeah, well, I only asked if you knew him because he was giving me a bit of the third degree, asking me how I knew you, and asking me if I was into you. If you ask me, I think he saw me with you this morning and was a bit jealous,” Michael said, giving Sam a long, measuring look.
Sam knew her face must really be red now. “Well, I don’t know why he’d be asking those kind of questions,” she said, shaking her head. “He has a girlfriend.”
Seeming to understand that Sam was at her limit as far as Phillip was concerned, Alex steered the conversation back to school, upcoming events, and most importantly, where they stood within the high school hierarchy.
“So as of right now, I’m at the bottom?” Michael joked.
“Okay, see there are the seniors—the “cool
