Brian offered her his hand as she stood
up.
“Sure.” She gave
him a small smile.
Brian signaled for
the waiter and he made his way to their table. Giving Brian the check and
taking her plate, he scurried off.
They were both quiet on the short
ride back to Stephanie’s house. When Brian pulled up in her drive, he turned
to her. “Baby, I’ll make this up to you,” cupping her chin.
Stephanie felt tears prick her eyes
but she blinked them away. “I know. I just want you to be safe.”
“I’m always safe. Let’s go.”
Brian gave her his sexy half smile.
Getting out of the car at the same
time, they both made their way quickly up to her door. Brian reached up and
unlocked it for them. Brain went to the bedroom to pack his things. Stephanie
sat down at the kitchen island and tried to absorb what was happening.
She took a deep breath, closed her
eyes and repeated I can do this. I can do this to herself. Slowly
opening her eyes, she still had a sense of dread in her stomach. Deciding to
not sit and dwell on it, Stephanie got up and placed her left over food in the
frig. She then grabbed the dish towel and began wiping down the countertops.
Brian came into the living room and
sat his bag down on the sofa. He made his way into the kitchen and came up
behind Stephanie. He pulled her hair back from her neck and leaned down to
kiss the sensitive area behind her neck. He wrapped his arms around her waist
and brought their bodies together.
“I’ll call as soon as I get to
Savannah but I don’t know when I’ll be able to call after that. It depends on
how fast we can get the fire out.” Brian placed a kiss just behind her left
ear.
Stephanie turned in his arms to
face him. She gave him a big hug and squeezed her eyes tight to keep from
crying. “I know you will. Please be safe.”
“Don’t worry baby.” Leaning down
to give her a searing kiss, his tongue explored her mouth with need and
desire.
Pulling back, he gave her a sexy
wink and turned to get his bag. Stephanie walked with him to the door and
stopped in the doorway. Brian made his way to his car. Before getting in, he
looked back at her once more. “I will call baby, I promise. Once this is
over, we will pick back up where we left off.” Brian got into his Charger and
drove south toward Savannah.
Chapter Ten
Brian arrived in
Savannah and drove straight to the fire scene. Aaron said he would bring all
of his equipment and it would be on the hook and ladder truck. He gave
Stephanie a quick call while he parked his car out of the way and jogged to the
hook and ladder truck to retrieve his things. He hurriedly put on his turnout
gear and grabbed his oxygen tank and mask.
Running over to
his captain to see what the status was on the fire and see what position he
wanted him to take.
“About damn time you
got here” his captain said in greeting.
“I came as soon as you
called. What’s the situation?” Brian was anxious to help out his fellow
firefighters.
“The building is
consumed. No one was in the building when it started. We are trying to keep
it from spreading to the building behind it. You can go to that side door and
help out those guys from station 9.” His captain turned to talk into the radio
to tell them they had one more man coming.
“Later Captain.” Brian began
running to the side exit as he was putting on his oxygen tank and mask.
Three men from Station 9 were
holding the water hose. There was a powerful stream of water going directly at
the building that was on fire. Brian jogged to the first man on the hose and
tapped him on the shoulder to let him know he was there. The first man put his
fisted hand up and made a circling motion above his head to let Brian know to
take over for him. Brian suspected that he was exhausted and
