wall was mirrored and lined with
wine bottle filled shelves.  Several bottles had ribbons and medallions hanging
from them.   The woman behind the counter greeted them warmly.
    “Hello and welcome
to the Windy Hill ” she said with a smile.  “Are you interested in our
wine tasting today?”
    “Yes we are” said
Brian.
    “Great.  Here is
our selection of wines.  Pick six you would like to try and mark them here” she
said while handing them a double folded paper with a wine list and check boxes
beside each wine.
    Stephanie and
Brian made their choices.  Stephanie chose the sweeter wines and Brian chose
mostly semi dry wines.  They both handed their wine selections back to the
woman.  She brought out two wine glasses that had Windy Hill Vineyards engraved on the side.  Looking at their selections, the lady poured each of
their glasses with their first choice of wine.
    They tasted their
wine as she gave them a little information about what they were drinking.
Brian and Stephanie repeated this process with their remaining five samples.
When they decided on their favorites, she poured them a glass and they made
their way to the back deck.
    The deck
overlooked another expansive vineyard.  There were grapevines as far as they
could see.  They sat down in the patio chairs and sipped the wonderful wine.
    “I didn’t think I
would like wine but this is really good.”  Brian gave her a half smile.
    “I like mine
too.”  Stephanie took a sip of hers and put her glass on the small table.
    They sat on the
peaceful deck and enjoyed each other and the wine.  When they were finished,
they made their way to the onsite restaurant, where the waiter could pair the
right wine with the right foods.
    Brian and
Stephanie ate and had an easy conversation.  They talked about places they have
traveled to, favorite books, movies, and foods.
    When Brian was
just about finished with his food, his cell phone rang.  Taking it out, he
looked at the caller id number and recognized it immediately.  He suddenly had
a knot in his stomach.
    “Is everything ok?”
Stephanie asked after seeing the worry etched on his face.
    “I need to take
this call.  I’ll be right back.” Brian got up from the table as he was
answering the phone.  He knew what it was about.  Brian told Aaron to not call
him this week unless there was an emergency with the fire department.
    “Talk to me” he
said into his cell phone.
    “Hey man.  We’ve
got a serious situation going on.”  Aaron had to talk over the background noise
of the sirens.
    “What’s up?”
Brian had a sense of dread envelop him.
    “I wanted to tell
you before the captain called.  There’s a big warehouse fire down at the ship
yards.  He’s going to be calling you in a few.  Sorry to ruin your week man but
we need all the man power we can get.”  Aaron was gathering his equipment as he
spoke to Brian.
    “It must be bad.
That’s not even our district.  I’ll be there in three hours tops.  Keep safe.”
Brian hung up the phone and then it rang again.  His captain was calling this
time.  Brian answered it and heard the same information repeated.
     Making his way
back to their table, Brian was preparing himself to tell Stephanie that their
week would be cut extremely short.
    “Hi.  Everything
ok?”  Stephanie could see that there was something wrong by the look on his
face.
    “No.  It’s not
ok.  I’m so sorry but I have to go.  That was Aaron and then my captain.  There
is a big fire out of our district and they need all the help they can get.
I’ve got to go back to Savannah.”  Brian watched the play of emotions on
Stephanie’s face as he told her the sudden change of plans.
    Stephanie felt so
disappointed but knew there was nothing she could do but support him.  “Ok.
What do we need to do?  Leave right now? “
    “Yes. Do you want
to take your remaining food with you?”
