lesser streets and pulled up behind him in the driveway of his duplex. Josh got out of the car, leaving it running per standard practice.
“Not even a wobble. I’d say you’re safe to drive on those tires. If you’re truly worried about them, take it over to a shop and have them looked at,” Josh offered.
“We’re talking about my tires now?”
Josh blinked at him innocently. “That’s why you pulled to the side of the road, isn’t it?”
“Does it matter why I pulled over anymore?”
Josh winked at him. “It does when I’m still on the clock.”
He dragged the back of his fingers down Brian’s chest. From the corner of his eye, he saw Mrs. Jackson’s window curtains twitch closed. Josh cleared his throat and stood up straighter.
“Leave the Phillip’s head at home next time,” Josh suggested, trying to suppress the urge to laugh again.
Josh turned to leave.
“Officer Severn,” Brian called out.
He glanced back as he reached for the door handle. “Yes?”
Brian looked at a loss. “Uh. Don’t you want some water or anything?”
“No. I’m good.”
“Are you sure? You must be thirsty,” Brian pressed, a cocky grin in place.
“I’m on duty, Mr. McCray. I can’t get thirsty .”
“Oh.”
Brian looked so disappointed that Josh half expected him to scuff his shoe on the driveway.
“Why don’t you go ahead and let yourself in so I know I won’t be getting another call about a burglary to this address,” Josh teased. “And Brian?”
“Yeah?”
“I’ll be calling to follow up about that appointment we discussed.”
Brian’s grin widened. “Sure, Officer. I’ll be looking forward to it.”
He waited until Brian swung the front door open. He waved at the younger man and Brian waved back. Josh pulled away. One thing was for sure. Brian McCray made his shift a lot more interesting.
Chapter Four
The next day, Josh waved at the front desk clerk on his way to the back. She smiled brightly. Too brightly, he realized in retrospect. She buzzed him through and as he passed from outer precinct to inner, he became aware of surreptitious smiles and giggles from a few of the officers.
He shot one of them a look, but kept walking.
It wasn’t until he got back to his desk in the main room, that he saw the problem. A huge, double bouquet of bright red roses overwhelmed his small desk. A couple of the guys hooted.
“Who’d you sleep with to get those, Severn?”
“Your dad,” Josh snapped back.
“Who’s Brian?” someone else wondered loudly.
Fuck! Brian had sent them? Josh took the card from the arrangement. The envelope flap had already been opened. No surprise there. Nothing was a secret at the precinct. Especially not a huge bouquet of roses delivered to a gay officer.
Thank you for last night, love Brian . “Oh, fuck. Me. Swinging,” Josh growled with annoyance. Josh’s hands shook with anger. What did Brian think he was playing at? This is the kind of shit that an officer never lived down. And the dubious “last night” would only make the guys think one thing, and it was clear they were doing that right now.
“Thank you for last night, Joshy,” one of the guys sang.
“Fuck all of you. I helped a guy with a flat tire.” Josh swung around to glare at the speaker.
“Was jacking involved?” someone asked crudely.
“Funny,” another officer told the first guy. “Jacking, like for the tire.”
    Moron .
“I get flowers for doing my job all the time.”
“So do I,” another guy claimed, using his fist to make a jacking off motion and lamely
trying to extend the overtaxed joke.
Josh swept the flowers into his arm, holding the vase against his side. He dropped them off with Susan at the front desk and kept going. When he reached his squad car, he got in and cranked the ignition. Brian was cute, but this stunt wasn’t.
He peeled out of the parking lot and made a beeline for Brian’s house. It was Friday, late afternoon. He had no way of knowing if Brian was off work yet, but by all that
