crossed the threshold, and it was very much like he’d crossed into a new definition of their relationship. Thursday night seemed almost like a dream. Had it happened as magically for Josh as it had for Brian? God, he hoped so. He’d been afraid the roadside play had been a moment of weakness, especially after the way Josh had left him at the doorstep with little more than a veiled promise.
A man could hope, couldn’t he?
“Want some coffee?” Brian asked him. Self-consciously he rubbed a hand through his shaggy mop of hair. Half-dressed and still damp from his shower, he couldn’t imagine being less prepared for a visit from the hunky cop. “What brings you here?”
“Your car.”
They’d reached the kitchen and Brian eyed him quizzically. “How so?”
“I think there may be a problem with it. The accelerator gets stuck to the floorboard and your tires have esteem problems. Probably because their owner keeps trying to stab them. Interestingly, it only has these crises when you’re on Lake Michigan Drive after nine at night. Strange, don’t you think?”
Brian ducked his head, pretending to search inside the fridge for creamer that was right in front of his nose. Anything to keep from meeting Josh’s eyes and letting him see how close he was to the truth.
“Yeah, that’s weird,” Brian agreed. Brian brought down another coffee cup and poured the dark liquid into it.
“Or,” Josh suggested. “You could just find a route that doesn’t include Lake Michigan Drive after nine o’clock.”
Brian could hear the amusement in his voice.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t do anything about disguising his wood. Just the sound of Josh’s voice, in his kitchen, made him think of sex. He wanted Josh’s wide palm on him again. This would be so comical, he decided, if it were happening to someone else.
“Is that for me?” Josh murmured inches from him.
Brian’s eyes shot open. Oh, fuck, he’d noticed the erection and was commenting on it! Brian’s face heated with embarrassment. “Uh.”
Brian sighed and faced the other man. He dropped a hand on his hip as casually as he could, and tried to smile. “Yep. It’s all for you. My weapon of self-destruction,” he quipped.
Josh gave a startled laugh. His brown eyes twinkled merrily, and he nodded toward the countertop. “I meant the coffee.”
“Fu-uck.” Brian’s whisper was met with another quiet laugh.
Josh stepped closer, sliding the mug across the countertop until he held it comfortably. He added creamer and swirled his spoon in the tanned drink. “I’ll keep the other in mind, though.”
Josh lifted the mug to his lips. He sipped slowly. When he lowered the mug, he gave Brian a small smile. “Did you know that Mrs. Jackson sent me two dozen roses with a note from you?”
Josh liked the way Brian’s eyes widened. The big-eyed surprise suited him, paired with the smattering of freckles.
“She did what?”
Josh took another drink of his coffee. “She sent two dozen roses in an arrangement to the precinct, with a note from you thanking me for last night, meaning two nights ago.”
Brian winced. Josh decided that was pretty adorable too. Josh stood closer than normal conversation distance.
“The guys at the precinct won’t let me live that one down for a while,” Josh added.
“I’m sorry. I’m really sorry about that. Mrs. Jackson means well.”
Josh laughed. “Funny. She said that about you, too. Right after she told me that you took four speeding passes on Lake Michigan before I was parked and clocked you.”
“You two had quite a chat,” Brian muttered. He ducked his head and a sandy brown tendril fell over his eye.
Josh brushed it back, then lifted his mug. Brian attracted him no small amount. It wasn’t just the heat of the moment that had him going, but the man himself. He was lively, funny, had an infectious smile and everything he’d seen about him so far, only drew Josh in. He wanted to know Brian. He wanted it badly.
“She seems to think
