mask.â
Swaggering, the two bullies disappeared into the hall.
Justine stared after them a moment. âNice guys,â she said.
âThey think theyâre bad dudes,â Terry said. âWhen it comes down to it, theyâre probably the two biggest cowards in Shadyside.â
âWell, I think what you did was really brave,â Justine said, giving him a brilliant and somehow intimate smile. âThank you.â
Terry noticed that she had her shiny blond hair pulled back in a braid and was wearing a lime-colored sweater that made her green eyes appear even greener.
âHey, listen, donât worry about those two,â said Terry. Then suddenly he realized what heâd done. Heâd stood up to the two meanest guys at Shadyside.
I couldâve been dead meat! he thought.
Was I out of my head, or what?
âYou were wonderful,â Justine said. âSome day Iâd like to show you just how grateful I am.â She let her smile linger, then went on. âI also want to apologize to you,â she added, her musical voice low and intimate.
âApologize?â said Terry, surprised. âFor what?â
Justine looked embarrassed. âIâI understand that my party invitations have caused some trouble. That thereâs some sort of contest.â
âWell, yeah,â said Terry. âBut itâs not your fault.â
âThank you for saying so,â said Justine. âI never meant the party to cause any bad feelings. All I really want to do is have a few special people over so I can get to know you all better.â For a moment she lightly rested her fingertips on Terryâs arm. He felt a jolt of electricity travel up his arm and then through his body.
âWellâuhâhey, I meanâ Weâd, uhâweâd all like to get to know you better too,â he stammered.
âI mean,â Justine continued, âthereâs no need for a contest. I have plenty of excitement planned without it. The whole idea just seems really silly.â
âThatâs what Niki says too,â said Terry. âNiki, my girlfriend,â he added quickly. âIn fact, she wonât have anything to do with the contest.â
âGood for her,â said Justine. âSheâs in my gym class, you know. Is it really true sheâs deaf? Someone told me she was, but itâs hard to believe.â
âItâs true,â said Terry. âBut most people canât tell.â
âIâm so glad sheâs coming to the party too,â said Justine. âI donât have any close girlfriends in Shadyside, and I have a really special feeling about Niki.â
âIâll tell her,â said Terry. He left feeling warm inside. This party was really going to be special, he thought. And no oneânot even Alexâwas going to spoil it for him and Niki.
N iki was waiting at his locker when school was over. When she saw him walk up, she smiled sheepishly. âHi, Terry,â she said.
âHi, Funny Face.â
âIâm sorry I got so mad before,â she said.
âItâs okay,â he said. âIâm sorry too. You were right.Iâve been taking the contest too seriously. I promise from now on to just forget about it and relax.â
âGood,â said Niki.
Terry smiled at her. It was good to see her happy again. And he felt more relaxed than he had all week too. âSo, which way should we walk home?â he asked. âThe long way or the shortcut?â
âI think the long way would be nice, donât you?â said Niki, squeezing his hand.
âYou bet,â said Terry. The long way would mean an extra ten minutes of just the two of them alone together.
Terry stuffed his gear in his day pack. âHere, let me have your books,â he told Niki.
She handed him her stack of books, but as she did, her geography book fell to the floor and a small scrap of paper
